RE: Keep or Toss A/C w/ Freon Loss?
the refer shops has some cleaning agents that works wonders in the evaporator coils... then for the compressor motor is a roll of the dice.... (I gess the odds are good if the unir where NOT used much dry) then the oil in the coils is NOT, NOT, NOT mineral.... is one called "CAPELLA" (from shell) you can get it in small pints from compressor shops (is a parafin free oil).
GO FOR THE REBUILD!!!
but is not only a mater of plugging and gasing it up.... change fan bearings, balance or change cage-fans, new relays, new capacitors, etc!
GOOD LUCK FROM SUNNY GUATEMALA (74degF)!!!!
RE: 1991 454 TBI motorhome-rearend ratio?
WHEN I bought mine, despite it was old piece of junk the last owner kep the "house" part very well mantained... that included all documentation regarding EVERYTHING of the equipment on board, that included the original manuals for the chev-chasis (cab forward) in its original form... and there I found a "unsticked" sticker with all RPO codes... I stuck it in the inside of the sink cabinet, one of the doors had all the codes for color and fabrics for my rig....
Ill send you a pic soon....
mine (acording to my RPO) and the sound of an airboat (high rpm) IN THIRD gear and pushing 50mph was 4.7..something.
I changed dif oil once and was too lazy to count teeth!
RE: 1991 454 TBI motorhome-rearend ratio?
since its a chevrolet, in the option code list (R.P.O. codes) there should be a sticker along with the paint codes, you will have to decipher all of them HERE.
Since you only whant to "KNOW" here is bunch of info youll find usefull, good luck
yours could be a DANA 70, with either 4.7something, or a 4.56, I doubt its a 4.11, open dif
RE: Whats the best & worse of Class A-ing & Gas vs Diesel ??
I dont own a diesel RV but own a diesel car, and so far this D VS G tread is very moderated and objective, nice points.
BUT we need to compare the most equal things between G VS D, my RV is a old piece of junk that has given me as many pleasures as dissapoinments and fun... (and thats only working on it) then is the part of actual camping on it....
my gasser, has decent amount of power, can pass slower cars, and will reach 50-60MPH somewhat easy in a flat ground; in uphills, it wil climb OK in the slow lane but I have to keep one eye on the road, one in the temp gauge and another eye on the left rear view mirror! (I have a toy for warp speed hillclimbs!, so Im in no hurry). In regard with noise... uffff is like having an airboat up front...nuf said. maintenance, since I bought used and current value is 0 any money I put on it will still kep its value at 0 so what the heck, I bought a hi perf distributor, tuned the carb (sheesh, yes CARB!) VERY EXPENSIVE I MIGHT ADD!, and in every 7-11 has a PH-8 oil filter, and any oil will do for limping home... so is a very easy, with ample spare parts availability, and for an entry level mechanic is simple mater of ONE cheap oil filter, a few quarts of good oil, 8 spark plugs, common air filter; in the end is a reliable 9MPG effort, but you have to pamper it a lot...
DIESEL: I will convert my rv soon to diesel, and I bought a international T444e engine (ford navistar 7.3) so it will be rougly same wheight, size, and handling... I expect to have a sugar mill grinding rocks for noise in the front... after some spending of termosonic insulation I think sound will return to a bearable level (maybe equal or less than gas), I will have to bear the stench of diesel, dirtiest pumps, spend more on specialized (AS IN SEVERAL) fuel filters WITH WATER TRAPS!, and the hassles of purging a complex and delicate system, oil filters will be the same... EXPENSIVES, as with change oil, is a specialized oil (High TBN) and for modern diesel at least an ACEA A-7, AND PLENTY OF IT, 10 to 30 QTs (!). fortunatelly It can provide good 400 FpTQ ALL DAY! (remember that HP sell engines and TORQUE WINS RACES!) and all for a good 12-14 MPG,
since my country, diesel is subsidized (sp?) its asubstantial savings.... but definite will NOT return the investment of turning it to diesel, is for my therapy, wrenching therapy...
for handling, sorry I can only drool at the sight of wolfe-10´s rig! (my next dream!)
RE: could my ref be kicking the bucket? (dom RM 2800)
Thanks guys... and Brett, I did (first ventilated a lot!) before runing it, after a while less than half an hour the freezer plate was very cold!!(ok, so far so good) ... maube it will last until new year.... Im worried if its a fire hazzard because of some H2 acumulation....
how do you take out a unit that its lenght (depth inside the cabinet) is LONGER than the free space from the door to the sink counter???? so it only will bulge halfway... or you can "unbolt" the amonia circuit and only replace that "part"?
where to begin unscrewing fasteners?
PS this forum is one of my favorite things I read in internet (my wife nags a lot about that, see the time of my postings!!!!!!!) but I have grown to believe this forum is like the Discovery Channel....
Im afraid now to walk on the beach of fear of "THE TEN DEADLIEST CREATURES" and the like....
and this common thing about refer related fires hipercharged by H2+O2, uncontrollably followd by "extremmely" flammable wood, rugs, foam.....
I do take much attention and Im carefull, as I stated before I treat mine like an airplane (for x hours of use (fun) there is a X hours of maintenance (work)) and the full respect of a machine that can KILL you if youre not FULLY AWAKE.
for all of you again thanks... I read all your posts!
RE: could my ref be kicking the bucket? (dom RM 2800)
as many know, (specially the mods!:C) I have a southwind '88 and I have it parked close to home (like in storage) and usually I go as often as 3-4 days apart... and the other day about a month ago, my mom cleaned the fridge (dometic RM 2800) using a glass cleaner w/amonia, and I smelled a faint scent of amonia... hmmmm so I hoped it was the glass cleaner, now today after leaving the fridge open for 15 days open w/a dehumifier; and I have it closed shut (accidentally) for the last week I opened it last night and a definitelly smell of amonia...:( altou not the pungent ofending of direct gas (I have the unfortunate to be close to an amonia accident!) :E
The smell comes from the inside, and in the outside even inside the burner chimmney doesnt smell....
could it be going south!?
IS IT DANGEROUS?
besides the smell Ive read here that a yellow stain around the leak could appear, (does not have any stain)
RE: Half Empty/ Half Full... lol
some help in the "hard to modify" .... aerodynamics
AIRTAB
Also Im doing a "big mod" that is to transplant a diesel engine (international T444e, A.K.A. ford navistar 7.3) to a southwind, chev 454, my goal is to go from 9mpg to almost 14 mpg on ( here subsidized) more eficient diesel!
RE: Gas Motorhome Horsepower
Besides the good advice above, flush the radiator and be sure hoses and fan clutch are good. Old MH radiators are prone to crud which leads to overheating.
I could quote everyone, because every item I have done myself.
pour a bottle ofWATER WETTER BECAUSE THAT CHEVY WILL GET HOT!
RE: Flat Tire ... Now What?
I was looking for a thing called TIRE BEE... but the e-site is down.
is a thing to put plugs into the holes of truck tires without dismounting from the vehicle, I use for my equpment... is permanent and the down time is reduced to almost none!.
for a on the road flat is a trully a lifesaver.. unfortunatelly is that only works in case the hole in the tire is caused by a nail or a bolt...
If you´d had a blowout..... :E (sorry, time to call the tow!)
RE: Putting fuel in a diesel pusher
maybe a little late but from my experience in having a diesel car:
the diesel pumps (pimps) are alwasys de dirtier, and since diesel does not evaporate (compared to gas... dont flame me w/technicalities!) the nozzle is always wet, the floor is always wet and dirty, I dont know why but truckers tend to use things in general harder than average and Ive seen a lot of hoses that the only one leaking in the diesel one, or all the planstic around or in use around the nozzle is smashed-broken-loose, etc.
So youre bringing it all to the coach and after awhile you feel that you have and open can of diesel up your nostrils!.
yes the diesel foams... and when youre near the top of your tank all that foam rides up the gooseneck of the filling door and..... pooooffffffffffffsssst! DIESEL SHOWER!, just put attention when near full capacity and the aproaching gurgling sounds... back up a little on the speed of the fill.. a gallon less than absolute up to the last drop capacity is a non isue!
in regard with the automatic stop feature of the nozzles LENNYJUDYM is right close enough... there is an 3/32" of a hole near the tip (1") from the end of the nozzle and in the top part, so when the fuel is flowing out of the nozzle there is a ventury effect that pulls atmospheric air (flamabble gas insithe that gooseneck, or something) and makes a stream of bubbles in which a float and a lever rides... so when the fluid reaches the little hole there no longer bubbles of air so the float drops and the lever pulls a stop (like the one in the tank of the stick house toilettes) with enough force to briskly jump the lever, thus unloking the handle thanks to the little spring in the stopper.... (ufffff finally after a nong explanation)
another thing about color of the diesel nozzles, sometimes in the same station there is a "so called" : "farm-diesel" or "agricultural-diesel" or "of-road-diesel" NOT NOT NOT to be comfused with "green-diesel" which is some sort of biofuel blend... (?).
apparently is regular diesel against ULSD or LSD (If you dont have particulae filter is a non issue) BUT! is colored (the liquid itself) to be distinguished from the long arm of the law....
After a while you end up liking the smell of fresh fuel around!!!!
ENJOY!!!!!!
RE: Gas Class A advice
I have an RV 28´ with two rear beds (in the master BR) have a DD 12, and DB (the brat!) 7, and me and DW sleeps in the couch... (closer to the TV! and fridge w/beers!).
RE: serioius mechanical problems, Villas Onac
WHERE ARE YOU STAYING IN MAZATLAN? I live here full time and will do whatever I can to help you. For starters, I have a Vonage line, and you are welcome to come to my home and use it to make calls to get the information you need. In addition, I have an xtra Mexico phone, and will loan it to you to use while you're working this out. I will get advice on mechanical help for you from my Mexican friends... and, if Bill can give me some kind of directions or landmarks to figure out where he got his truck repaired, I can maybe help by providing that information for you. So... I'll be watching for your location, and if you have a US or CAN cel phone with you, give me the number, and I'll try calling you that way. My home number here is: (669)668-35-71. If you have a phone you can use at the park to call me, I'll be here in the morning, and when I leave home, I'll have my cell phone with me. That number is: 044-669-147-3886. I'll watch for your reply here, and listen for your call. If you're able to call tonight, not a problem... I'm not tired yet, so will be up for another hour or so. Lee
SEE EVERYONE... WOW! WHAT A GENTLEMAN!
I wish I had such oportunity to help a close fellow RVER!

RE: GPS vs Radar
try this, with your hand held GPS,
while going highway speed put the gps in front of you, arm extended full forward, then with a movement of your arm move the gps in a linear fashion towards your chest then towards your back, all of these in close to one second....
speed DOES change, and sometimes takes a while to recover back to where it was, even thou the rig speed is constant....
I was a super fan of GPS when it first came public... maybe because of a novelty high tech "toy", now I doubt all the new tech that will come as in "free flight"....
RE: serioius mechanical problems, Villas Onac
ask the dealer for NEW, N*E*W*, (BIGGER) NNNNEEEEEWWWWW, head bolts, not to be reused the old bolts, they are torque-angle´d tightened so they are one use---shot.
better yet... for the same price get ARP!
RE: Loose dog attacked me and my dog
also there is some form of dog-mace, is different than for humans...
a CO2 extingisher fired close to the snouth....
besides, carring a small extinguisher in hand is less fearfull to others than to carry a spray-baton-or handgun!
