RE: Charging a towed car battery.

I have the toad and MH engine battery connected with a 12 gauge wire. Fused at both batteries, wired up through the 6 way connector.

RE: Microsoft - XP vs 7

The CD may not be correct for your COA. The issue is with HP, not microsoft. You will get much futher getting a restore CD from HP. HP got the licence from MS. MS doesn't have a dog in the race, just HP. OEM CD's from other vendors and upgrades will not work.
If you want to do a clean install, without the fluff from HP that can be done. You will have to get the hardware drivers from HP download and install the ones that XP doesn't get.
Two things identify the install CD you are using. The disk name that of the CD, should be WXHOEM_EN. The other is the PID. It is listed in the setupp.ini file in the I386 folder on the CD. Format is Pid=xxxxxOEM. The xxxxx futher identifies the disk.

RE: Replacing "crashed" hardrive questions

The only thing to make sure of it the max hard drive size for the bios. Did a quick check and the one source I looked at said 320g is the max the bios would recognize. Don't know if that is the as shipped bios or newer one that Dell has. What all that means is the bios in the laptop has to be able to recognize hard drives with large capacities. If the bios doesn't it will not give you full capacity of the hard drive.
Not real difficult, take hard drive caddy out and put the new hard drive in the caddy and reinstall. Put restore disk in and follow the prompts.
The higher speed drive will draw a little more power which means a little less time on battery power.

RE: Microsoft - XP vs 7

if i call microsoft they want $75 to talk about my licensing problem (restore cd won't accept the license stuck on the side of the HP computer).
buy a new copy of XP home full $95
buy windows 7 home full $170
is it worth the money comparing xp to 7 not linux to 7 or linux to xp.
I gather you have a COA sticker for XP Home on your HP. Your COA key will work when an OEM XP Home install disk is used, not one from HP. It would be much easier to install XP on a partition and dual boot to keep your other operating system. I just finished XP installs on two laptops using the COA sticker key, XP Pro and Home. I slipstreamed SP2 and SP3 into the install disks.

RE: Mapping Software

I have S&T 2007. I tried the right click on the Route planner. There is no option to edit. You have to put a correct address in and once you click ok the address appears with a number. Once in the box you cant edit it
You probably need a later version to edit the names of the stops.

RE: Mapping Software

Can the Streets and Trips be upgraded? I see S&T 2006 w/gps advertised for only $44. If you buy that, can you upgrade it as part of the program, or is it like the different Windows and when they quit supporting them?
Each year of S&T is a version. If you want to upgrade you get a later year. You can use just about any GPS receiver with S&T. I have used a bluetooth GPS with two different versions.

Basically like a firecracker fuse waiting for a flame. Only a little bigger.
2000 Ford chassis on the MH, same thing. Got mine done in 2006.

RE: Voltage reading at charger and battery

I plugged it into the voltage drop calculator and at 12v with a 10 amp load the voltage at the other end is 11.63 volts. Fot 10 gauge wire with an 18 foot length it may be about right. Not sure if you should use 9 feet as the length because it says: Enter 1-way circuit length in feet (the calculation is for the round trip distance)
Wire Gauge and Current
The calculator is at the bottom of the page.

Have at least 4 Gigs of free space on the hard drive?
For a great defrag utility try MyDefrag. It used to be JKDefrag when it was open source. One of the best and it is free.

RE: No sound after installing Vista SP2

If you are getting sounds the driver is present. Go to the control panel and go through all the tabs and buttons for sounds and audio devices. Make sure the volume controls for all the audio types are not set all the way off, the volume controls you get when you double click the speaker icon.

RE: rv not used for 4 years

I bought one in 2006 that had been sitting for almost that long. Brakd fluid, flush the old fluid out. Grease the front end and drive train, change all the fluids. I ended up changing the shocks and putting new tires on.

RE: Finally dumped Vista - Huge improvement!!

I'm staying with XP. I put this desktop together over 5 years ago. I've added and deleted sooo many programs. I'm going to get all my stuff to another drive and start over. I just finished making SP3 slipstreamed XP install disks for a clean install on the desktop and a laptop. Going to start all over again, staying with something I know.

RE: Cell phone coverage in Canada/Alaska

Sprint has very little coverage in Alaska. We didn't even try to use the phones on the way up in Canada. Only cities covered by sprint towers is Juneau, Anchorage and Fairbanks. Everything else is very spotty roaming. We switched to AT&T two years ago. If you are just going to use the phone for calls I would buy a pay as you go phone on AT&T and get the Canada roaming to reduce the cost per minute. Even with the plan it is still about 50 cents per minute. Pretty good coverage till you get north of Edmonton. From Edmonton to Tok there is not much with an carrier.

RE: What is the definition of a Recreation Vehicle??

Texas gun laws says: In this subsection, "recreational vehicle" means a motor vehicle primarily designed as temporary living quarters or a vehicle that contains temporary living quarters and is designed to be towed by a motor vehicle. The term includes a travel trailer, camping trailer, truck camper, motor home, and horse trailer with living quarters.

RE: Solar question

First of all the chassis and house batteries should be disconnected from all loads during storage. The easiest way to do this is to disconnect the battery ground cables. Then connect the house and chassis batteries together with a small wire, about 16 gauge, -to - and +to +. Then connect the solar controller to the batteries.
The pannel is not large enough to keep the batteries charged if they are not disconnected from loads.

RE: How do I pull in a weak WiFi signal?

I use a wireless adapter with a built in directional antenna. It is on a 6 foot USB cord. The device does not have to be stuck out a window. It will operate inside the RV but it is best if it is pointed out a window. Like has been said before. Line of sight with few obstructions works best. The device is a Airlink AWLL3055 Wireless G Usb 2.0 Adapter with 10dbi High Gain Antenna, about $40 from Amazon. Model number AWLL3055

RE: Bluetooth GPS receivers with laptop navigation software

How long will the Bluetooth GPS last on a charge..
My GPSlim 236 will last 5-6 hours. It charges through a mini usb charge port like many bluetooth devices. Car chargers and wall chargers are interchangeable between devices. They all put out 5v's. The battery in the 236 is a Nokia phone battery.
