If the old drive is still bootable or you did make good backups (hopefully a system image backup) it should be an easy matter to install the new drive and clone the old drive or restore the backup image.

I live in a small little town in California of about 80,000 residents. By California standards, we live in the sticks and most people have never heard of it. But if my small town was located in many other states it would be as big as the State capital. We'd be the big city.
You live in a metropolis compared to the Calif town I live in (4,400 residents)! Technically, we're not a town but an unincorporated area of the county. We don't have a mayor or town council and no police or fire departments. We depend on the county for those services.
In the last year there was an attempt to incorporate but it was defeated.
There's an elementary school here for K-6th but after that the kids get bussed to the big city down the road, population 38,000!

Exactly. I started out using email clients in the early 80's but once web based email came about, I switched and never looked back. I love the fact that my email address never changes even if I switch ISPs and love the fact that I can access my email from any device with a browser.
I've been a Hotmail user for more than 10 years and have emails stored on their server that are that old (no need for me to store them locally). I once tried to access one of the older emails but got an error instead. I sent an email to Hotmail support and the next day I was able to open that email.
I've never had the desire or need to read and reply to emails off-line so that isn't a plus for me.

What plan are people going with? I looked at the available plans and they all seem to be pretty costly. The plans below $80/month were charged data at $1.99 per mb while the $80 and $100 plans had unlimited data. Too rich for my blood and per mb scares the heck out of me.

Hmmm... I wonder why you got the BSOD when you plugged it into your new machine?
Congrats that you were able to recover your data.
The hard drive from the laptop was a complete XP booting operating system which confused the new computer when I plugged it in.
I was essentially trying to boot and already booted system.
Like trying to start your heart when it was already started. :E
Seems like having a Linux computer lying around comes in handy.
Plugging in an external drive won't change the boot order, I've done what you described (plug in external, bootable drive) many times on XP machines without incident, never required a Linux machine. I've also attached drives like that internally with no issues.
I can think of a scenario that might cause confusion and that would be if you plugged the external drive in BEFORE booting the machine AND your BIOS settings were configured to boot from a USB device first.

When you finally get the copy, take it to the "clerk and recorder's office" at your local courthouse, and have it recorded. That way, it is always there, and readily available if you need another copy.
If your records were involved in the fire some years ago, forget it, you probably won't have any chance of recovering them.
Yeah, when I separated from the army in 1974 I was advised to have it recorded with the county clerk (and did). Don't they advise all personnel to do that?
Of course, in the 35 years since I've only been asked to show my DD214 once. I still have a copy lying around somewhere but I think it would probably be more of a hassle to retrieve a copy from the county than to use the website above to request a copy.

If you are interested in using the Aero features of Win 7 you should be careful regarding that model computer. Aero requires 128M of graphics memory and that only has 64M. Also, the graphics memory is shared with your main memory which means it uses some of your main memory for graphics memory instead of having separate memory for graphics.

My grandparents had two televisions stacked on top of each other - both worked though...kinda. The sound worked on one...the picture worked on the other. Between the two you had one good working tv. Does that mean I'm descended from rednecks? Nevermind...don't answer that. I already know the answer.
Heck, my dad did that when I was a kid. We had 2 19" B&W TVs stacked one on top of the other. One had picture but no sound the other sound but no picture. When we changed the channel we had to change it on both TVs! Of course we only got 2 channels and they were both fuzzy.

Internet based backups seem like a good idea provided you have a fast internet connection. Make sure you consider the upload speed (for backup purposes) as well as the download speed of your connection when deciding whether or not to use an on-line backup service.
For instance, the connection I have is limited to about 200K upload speed so an on-line backup literally takes days to accomplish. Way too slow to be of any use to me.
If you have a fast internet connection it probably is a viable solution but it just is not an option for me.

The great thing about crucial.com is that they have a scanner tool that will scan your computer and tell you how much memory you have, how many slots there are and what is the max amount of RAM that can be installed. It will then allow you to order the correct memory modules so that there is no guesswork on your part.
Here's a link to the Dell site for step-by-step instructions on how to replace/install the memory in your computer: Dell XPS M140 Service Manual
Your laptop has 2 memory slots and since you already have 512M, my guess is that you have a single 512M in 1 slot. You have several options: Buy another 512M for slot 2 for a total of 1G, Buy a 1G module for slot 2 for a total of 1.5G. If you want to max the ram out at 2G you will need to get 2 1G modules, pull the existing 512M module and install the 2 1G modules.

... I've often wondered how different things would have been if Digital Research had won the IBM PC operating system deal.... Some guy named Bill bought CPM and sold only the "right to use" to IBM, calling it DOS (Disk Operating System), but retained ownership of the DOS product. He got a royaly on every machine sold with a DOS disk.
Actually, Bill didn't buy CPM, he bought a product called "QDOS" (Quick and Dirty Operating System) from a company called Seattle Computer and renamed it MS-DOS.

Yeah, I remember DOS where each application you used had to have it's own driver for your video card, modem, printer, etc... Where you could only run 1 program at a time and you had a memory limit of 640K. Yup, good ol' DOS.
I remember when I was a Beta tester for OS/2 1.0 before they added the GUI, Presentation Manager. It had the ability to run multiple DOS boxes meaning you could run multiple DOS apps concurrently. I was in 7th heaven until the first build that included PM. I absolutely hated it, but eventually it grew on me.
Even though I learned computers on mainframes where everything was done from the command line, I still prefer a GUI today. For instance, File management is much easier with a GUI then it ever was from the command line or even using an app like XTree.
I have many DOS only machines around my house but I only use them to play with since most of them can't even access the internet or only have floppy drives.

That helps. I bought the Professional Version hoping to do use it that way. My computer doesn't have the virtualization technology, but I don't mind either upgrading or building up a replacement. I've been trying to find information on what processors/bios supports it without much luck. Even new retail computers don't specify it.
Your info is different than what I had seen somewhere else about XP Mode including a licensed version of XP. That would be a lot better if I build a new system. I would still have this XP machine.
I can't help you with determining which processors/bios support virtualization from the mfr specs, maybe a call to the mfr to ask before you buy is in order. I think most current machines do support it, my 3 yr old machine with an Intel Dual Core processor supports it, as does my 2 yr old laptop with Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
Here's a link to a little utility that will tell you if a given machine supports it or not and whether it is enabled in the BIOS:
