We registered our phones (telcel) last year, and just before we crossed the border into the US we put 200 pesos (60days) of time on, Lost the minutes of course, but hoped to keep the same phone numbers. We walked into the Mega in Maz and told the checkout girl we wanted to put 200 pesos on our phones. Gave the the numbers, she entered them into the till, asked if it was telcel, movistar etc, and at the push of a button our phones were working with the same numbers as last year. Piece of cake. Just don't let your phone be out of time for more than 6 months, or 180 days or something like that.
Thanks for the advice. We do have Motosat, but Skype won't work on that. Perhaps we should just use Skype on some WiFi connections we can pick-up in Mexico. Not knowing Spanish, I'm hesitant to buy a Movistar phone, etc, as their plans in's and out's may be difficult to understand.
I have satellite internet - Dial-up speed at broadband prices...
A few weeks ago I bought a Pennytalk prepaid card here in the US so I could call the campground where we're going in Mexico. I will suspend my AT&T cell while we're SOB for 3 months but I have an "emergency" Pay As You Go phone with about 700 minutes, T-Mobile. Will it work if I use the T-Mobile to call the 800# for Pennytalk? There is a nominal 49cent hook up fee for each call with Pennytalk then 9cents a minute. Has anyone tried something like this or do I have to buy a dedicated Mexico phone?
