I have a bag of plastic lug nut covers that came with my 2010 Cougar. I placed one on the nut. Is thier a special way of getting these off? It was very difficult to pry it off the nut. I was afraid of marking up the rim. I don't believe you can check the tightness of your lug nuts with the covers in place. Just wondering if you use yours and how you manage the removal of them when necessary.

I use pr of adjustable pliers and kind of rock it back and forth, not gripping too tightly so as not damage it. They are kind of a pain!

Mine are now 8 years old. When I first got them, I had to use pliers to get them off. But... in the last 3 or 4 years they have become loose enough that I can just pull them off with my fingers. If they get too much looser I will begin to worry that I'll lose them!

Mine are still in the bag... never put them on. It's too much of a PITA to remove them all before each trip to check the lug nut torque.

Cover the jaws of your slip-joint pliers with a little friction tape before you attempt to remove the covers. This will give your pliers grip and not mar the finish of those nut covers.
As for the covers that came with my Cougar. They also are still in the bag. I didn't want to be bothered with taking them off and then have to reinstall them after I check the torque of my lug nuts.

At about 1000 miles down the road on our first trip out, I was advised to check the torque on the lug nuts. Went out and bought a wrench and socket. My goodness! it had lug nut covers! returned the socket, got one to fit the lugs! Life happens that way. But, I use the waterpump pliers to remove them. yeah, they are a little chewed, but, what the heck, they are black plastic lug nut covers, not wife's new shoes! Wish I could get some for the Chevy whose center caps were of the self-ejecting variety. I've got one of four left.
