we are very interested in working in Skagway this summer. anybody have any experiences and what can we expect in traveling from Seattle to Skagway, how far, gas prices, rts to take? thanks
take board games......skagway is a very compact area...one road in one boat out...
don't go the casiar....it has contruction that will be very muddy in the spring.....no issues with finding gas and services and even campgrounds while traveling......from seattle go up to prince george, then north to watson lake and just after watson lake and just before whitehorse turn south on the road into skagway...there are lots of safeways with gas pumps and reduced gas prices if you use your safeway card. hopefully, they will be back to giving good discounts by then... I think it kinda averaged about $4 a gallon for deisel.... gas was a little less. but prices are by the liter so get used to using a quicky conversion chart....using a credit card to pay for stuff also got you a good exchange rate and you stay away from the floating exchange rate that canadians can use.
mileposts covers that part of the drive very well.....worth the investment for sure.....there is an onliune version now which saves a couple trees if that will work for you also....
PM with other questions, our Blog of our travels this last year are still up at www.pamperingcampers/blogspot.com
OK where are all the Safeways in Skagway and gas pumps.
As I remember there is one C store with a fuel pump for gas and diesel and one store for groceries that you will need to shop on Wendsday because the boat comes in on Tuesday and all the vegies are fresher on Wednesday. There is one propane business and you need to go to him to get propane because he got ticked off at one of the campground owners and now will not go any of the campgrounds. Least that is what he told me.
When you get near Whithorse that would be the time to get supplies at the Walmart or other stores there in Whitehorse.
Whitehorse is pretty good sized and we had our winshield repaired there and took Smokey Joe to the dog doctor then went to Skagway for a week while Smokey got better if he got worse we were to head back to Whitehorse. He got better and we went down the Casier and points south and east.
hahahaha,,,,,,,,,OK that was in reply to the part about gas and services along the way...sorry I didn't make that clear....yes, whitehorse is the main place to get things....even Haines (1 hour by boat) only has limited services.
Skagway can be expensive, as said Whitehorse is place to shop, unless you take fast ferry or flight to Juneau. Beautiful place with tons to see and do,wonderful place after about 5 pm everyday. During the day just need to love people and crowds with as many cruise ships that arrive daily.
Many of the summer works come back year after year. What works for them may not work for you.

There was an article a long while ago (which I can't locate now) which said the Skagway police were enforcing a law which apparently said that folks who are employed there have to have AK registration on their vehicles.
Anyone remember this? Might be something to ask about...
Good luck! It is a great place to spend some time.

I'm guessing it is like so many states....they have the laws on the books, but don't find them worthwhile to try to enforce and only bring it up if you get into trouble.
we heard rumors of this also up there, but didn't see many hosts changing plates over for that reason.
we did see allot of people changing because they wanted to take advantage of being from the state that offers the most different kinds of perks to it's residents. I remember military guys going up there and changing their residence to AK. because of the annual oil check that residents were entitled to.
We just finished our third season workamping in Skagway this summer. It is a great little town. They do not enforce the law about having to change your residency to AK. Too many employers were having trouble getting summer help. There is a lot to do in the area if you like hiking, animal watching, gold rush history, and small town activities. But if your idea of a good time is going shopping at box stores, you may want to avoid the area.
