RE: Doing the Distillery tours in Kentucky

Did Buffalo Trace last year and really enjoyed. You can sample at the end and buy their product at gift shop.
Have also done Woodford Reserve and Jack Daniels. All were nice tours, but Buffalo Trace was probably the best. We took the Hard Hat Tour, which meant we saw more of the operation. Who knows.......tour good either way.

RE: Class A vs 5th Wheel Full Time W/Child

Before I read all the posts I was going to suggest a 5th wheel toyhauler. It would be perfect spot for privacy, bed, desk, etc. And provide plenty of storage space for whatever you may want to haul when travelling.
We recently looked at Raptors and the 300MP model, which is their smallest unit and has 10' garage room. Most come with snap down carpet. And I think they're about 35' long.

RE: New TT owner ready to equip for dry camping

We have a Yamaha 3000 watt generator. It runs our 15,000 btu a/c for 11+hours at summertime temps. We've been very pleased. I don't worrry about extra batteries and solar since I've got the genny. Most of our boondocking is at motorcycle races so we can run it at night for a/c. If we need to run microwave or some other high draw appliance we shut of a/c for a bit.
Carry an extra can so we can add fresh water as needed. Have a flowjet pump so we can dump at home after trips if no public station is available.

RE: 45 nights of camping in 2012

That's about what we averaged when kids were younger. Now have two in college and one left in high school so camping tougher.
We to had/have Scouts/church/sports/etc. What we gave up for camping was summer travel sports like baseball and swimming. What we gained was family fun and visiting 40 states.
Last couple years we've done some football tailgating and camping at dirt bike races (hare scrambles). Roll with the changes.

RE: Time for a new truck

I think all three are very good right now. You might consider individual ammenities and dealer preference. Of course price usually influences the final choice also.

RE: What size truck should I get?

You've had plenty of advice on trucks. Also consider cab configuration. I'd suggest a crew cab. In 2004 when I bought mine Ford and GMC/Chevy had good size rear seats. Dodge only had what I call the extended cab. In later years they made the Mega.

RE: Would I have to stop at weigh stations?

We race motorcycles and lots of folks show up with trailers lettered with team names, rider names and specific motorcycle brands plastered over them. They are clearly amatuer and trailers are fairly small. None of these folks consider their vehicles commercial.

RE: Dutchman Voltage instruction

Find a friend who has more experience than you. Things like winterizing, sanitizing fresh water, electrical system, frig, etc. are pretty much the same regardless of brand. You might also try contacting an RV mobile service man and pay him to walk you through and answer questions.
If all else fails, find a busy campground to stay overnight. Pull out your toolbox. You'll probably have all sorts of folks willing to offer advice!

RE: out of control swaying

My previous rig was a 1996 GMC Sierra 1500 ext. cab towing a 30' TT bunkhouse (no slide). I was within tow limits of truck. And in my opinion wheelbase was adequate. We experienced sway and excessive push/pull from passing trucks. We solved the this with a Hensley Arrow hitch. Problem solved.
I won't advocate masking other problems. Plenty have given good advice regarding tongue weight, tire inflation, brakes, etc. But it sure did fix it for us. Pro-Pride is another, less expensive, hitch designed by same person as the Hensley. Cost for either is higher than most traditional hitches, but far less than 6k damage to vehicle and totalled trailer.

RE: Which 5er to buy

Most roofs are rubber (EPDM). The rig in our sig. has vinyl. Doesn't shed the black chalk like rubber, but it's still a soft material and will tear. Fiberglass roof probably the best, but found mostly on high end units and motorhomes.
Our rig is about 32'length. When reserving spots I usually just say it's 30'. Never had any problems in public parks. Only one I've seen we'd probably had trouble was in Arches, but we didn't stay there, just saw how tight spots are.
The smaller the better, especially in the older parks designed decades ago.

RE: Tag axle gassers

My uncle had a 1996 Newmar Mountain Aire gasser on the Ford chassis with tag. Previous poster made note of brakes, tires, etc. I have no reason to doubt his remarks. Tags were added to increase capacity.
I will say this was probably one of the nicest/fanciest gassers ever made. It was essentially a DP on a gas frame.

When we visited we stayed at Cherry Hill and rode the train in each day. They have a shuttle that will take you to train depot, or you can drive there yourself. It just down the road.
Train worked great for us.

RE: Another overpriced KOA

Not sure a heated pool means much since it's been record hot for months. Nonetheless, you have the choice to stay at State parks, NPS, and COE parks for half the money. Doubt most of these have wifi, pools, or full hookups.
We've stayed at this park. It's a business and they need to make a profit.

I have one and use it about half the time. Works good if you plan to be hooked up for several days and want to leave grey valve open.

RE: Generator to run A/C ???

If you opt for a 3000 unit I can offer our experience. Have a Yamaha and it will run our 15,000 btu a/c for 11+ hours on a single tank of gas. Also runs fridge, lights, and television. If we need to use any other high draw appliance, such as hair dryer, electric skillet, or microwave we shut off a/c. It is heavy and requires 2 to load/unload.

RE: Chicken or the Egg - Truck or 5er

We were similar. However, when it came time for a new truck we upgraded. Waited a year or so then bought new 5er. Replacement of truck was needed anyway.
If you have a seasonal site, you may find you rarely/if ever need to move it.

RE: Where did the years go????

Our family could have written a nearly identical post. Boys now 20, 19, and 16. We intentionally avoided a lot of summer travel league ball to free up time. We've seen 40 states and have countless memories...Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Yellowstone, New York City, Washington DC, and oil stained beaches on the gulf.
We switched gears a couple years ago and now have used rv to tailgate at some MU football games, camp at dirt bike races, etc. Still camping just shorter trips and age/event appropriate.

RE: Generator in Truck Bed?

I use a bicycle cable lock for our yamaha 3000. I also stick a 2x6 board under it to high center the wheels so it doesn't roll around.
