RE: 1986 Chevy G20 3/4 ton, 6.2 Diesel

From your speed it sounds like you did just fine. Fix your starter and you're good to go.

RE: Got stuck.....

I wonder what people with Prevost's do? :h I haven't seen a 4x4 Prevost yet. :B LOL They camp on the expensive asphalt pads :B Funny I was talking with the salesman on the phone couple of weeks ago. He ask what I wanted on the truck. I mentioned 4WD and he said " we don't order anything with 2 WD " Well I guess that's true. The only time I park on an asphalt pad when camping is when I camp at Wal-Mart! Quite a few Prevost's camp at Wal-Mart right along side with me! :B I never have gotten stuck in my 4x2 Chebbie while camping on dirt or grass. In fact I have never gotten stuck in Wal-Mart either.

RE: Traveling in Tornado prone areas

This has been talked about many time on here. Here are the odds: Auto deaths in the US every year= Over 300,000. :E Tornado deaths in the US every year= Less than 70. You are traveling on the road with an RV. Your chances of being killed while on the highway in your RV are way, way, way, way, way, way, higher than even seeing a tornado let alone being killed by one. The storm chasers try their best to run into tornados and even they, with all the high tech equipment they have; have a REALLY hard time doing that. Do the best you can; try to be careful and move on with life. Life is a fatal disease anyway. :E I think your facts are a bit skewered. You are way low. And if you factor in property damage, tornado are one of the most devastating natural phenomena. 2011 Tornado Fatalities You make my point very well when I say a lot of people don't understand statistics and "averages." You cherry picked 1 year with a bad death total from tornados. I can do the same thing. What about 1986? There were only 15 people that died in the whole US that year from tornados. That must mean my stats are high then right? :R It's like saying traveling by airplanes are dangerous because in 2001 over 4000 people died in airplane crashes. The fact is, airplane travel is one of the most safest modes of travel. BTW it's not my facts. The facts come from NOAA. They are the people that keep tract of weather facts, not me. People are all upset about the OK tornado. It's a treble tragedy when people die in any way except old age. But the fact of the matter is more people die on the roads in the US each and every day than in the one day tornado tragedy that happened in Ok this week. IOW's almost a THOUSAND people are going to die on the roads of the US this week and every week thereafter in the US. I will say it one more time. If you are an RV'er, death by tornado is almost the last thing you have to worry about. If you check my facts you will find out that statement is very true.

RE: Towing Shouldn't Be This Difficult - Help Needed

Thanks everyone for your help and input on our issue. I think it was this forum that enlightened me to the phrase "won't return to center". That's exactly what the problem is, which I was describing as "wander". You need to take it to an alignment shop and tell them to put as much "castor" as they can get into the front end. Read about positive castor here.

RE: Bumper Pull vs. Fifth Wheel

I have towed both. Both can tow nice and both can tow not so nice. I can hook up my TT in less than 5 minutes. I challenge any 5er owner to do it in less time with a regular tail gate. I now have a TT but I like the 5er floor plans better. In the future when I buy a new trailer I will look at both. A properly setup TT will tow every bit as nice as a 5er IMHO. Like I said, I have towed both.

Got ya. That makes more sense now. Hope you figure it out. Not too fun and relaxing to tow with a rig that does not handle well.

The new shop found the ball joints were too tight, not too loose, which I guess is more common (I think?). Anyway, the ball joints are being replaced this morning. Cross your fingers. Hmmmmmm in 40 years of automotive work I have never heard of too tight of ball joints? :h Wear makes them loose and then you have play in suspension and steering components.

RE: 1986 Chevy G20 3/4 ton, 6.2 Diesel

You'll be fine for what you're trying to do. We towed a race car and trailer for years with the same truck. I did manage to blow up the tranny and torque converter band. Fixed it and off it went. That thing pulled down 24 mpg on the hiway.

RE: Any 13' Ram DEF MPG yet?

Let me refresh your memory. Link from mid January I guess we are all JA's guys. Just use the block feature on my posts if you don't like em. Truth hurts You don't know when production started, DA MM49 Real easy to solve. Take a picture of your truck with the fuel door open to clearly show the DEF fill port. Done.

RE: Any 13' Ram DEF MPG yet?

I saw on the 2500's they ONLY offer the 3.42's... Thought that was strange? Not when you have almost 400 HP and over 800 ft/lbs of torque and a 6 speed tranny on tap. :B

RE: New invention could benefit RVers.

Now imagine a 26 ft motorhome that got 16 MPG using the Oldsmobile Toronado drive train (the Olds got around 8 MPG). http://www.gmcmi.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/4.jpg 1971 Travco. I'll imagine it, but it's not going to happen. Not in this world anyway. I'm VERY familiar with the Olds 455. The only way that thing will get a 16 MPG EPA rating is if you built it on top of Pikes Peak and drove it to the bottom and took the MPG reading. I bet the next thing I hear on this forum is two men in black coats and a black car talked to the boy and bought out his windshield patent. AKA the 100MPG carburetor. :R Look, school busses are not race cars. Most of the time they putt around on streets at 40/hour or less. There is a reason they don't have aero packages on them. There is also a reason why trailers like the V-Cross don't really work and trailers like Air Stream do somewhat. If the aero package on the V-Cross worked so well you would see tons of them in campgrounds. I think I have only seen one or two in my life in campgrounds.

RE: 1T Pickup special rules and regulations?

LINK If one reads down, this article from August 2009 states there is a recreational vehicle exemption. Never heard or seen anyone getting bothered in this state for trying to tow a large trailer to a campground... RV's IMO are most likely the least of any state's highway patrol problems. That's very true but they are some of the best revenue enhancers. :B

RE: New invention could benefit RVers.

Sorry but IMHO this thing smells more than a tuna fish that has been in the sun for 10 days. Like a TT the back is every bit as important as the front. Aerodynamics is a complete package. You just don't glue something on to the front of a bus and pick up 20% in mileage. I don't know what the angle is but there is one.

RE: 06 GMC 3500 vin "D"

It had 55,000kms on and judging from photos seems to be in decent shape. 55 KMS? Hmmmmmmmmm? I have taken care of fleets for my state and for the Feds and for the state they wanted 150 thousand miles on before we could survey them out. The Feds wanted somewhere around 100 thousand but really did not have a solid policy on miles before survey. At 55 KMS I would want to know why they are getting rid of it?

RE: unplug my wire harness?

Owned 4 Chevy trucks over the years and they were always hot. I never unplugged any of them and never had a problem with the batteries going flat. I will continue to never unplug while I'm hitched up and suspect I will continue to never have any problems. :W

RE: Transmission oil cooler

So what kind of temps are you seeing right now? IMHO I would leave well enough alone. I've seen people do this and break hoses or a fitting leak or something gets rubbed up and causes a leak or even cause overheating problems by stacking too many coolers in front of the radiator. If you're not over gross on the load you should be fine.

RE: Interesting travel day

Two WAGS from me. #1 would be some kind of grounding issue/s. #2 would be something wrong with the body module.
