Have you been draining the fuel/water seperator often? This is the first thing Ford is going to look at when they inspect the truck. If there's water in there, good luck getting any warranty coverage for the HPFP.

Yes. I have had small amounts but never a WIF light. If that is a problem then why even bother with the separator. Just a joke by Ford to make you lay on the ground under the truck every couple of weeks.

Heading to a campground today, info center comes on stating pull over safely or something similar. Barely make it to the side of the road and the truck just shuts off. No crank, no start, I think the computer shut everything down.

2008 job 1 with 75k miles. Had it towed to the dealer but they are closed until Monday. My biggest fear is the dreaded HPFP and I will be royally bent over by Ford. Anyone had something similar happen and should I lube up before head to the dealer Monday.

Any advice on how to proceed if warranty is denied. If they deny warranty I sure do not want Ford performing the work but my guess they will have me by the short hairs with a repair bill just to get to the denial stage.

Let me give you some good news mich800. IMHO from the info you gave us this won't be a HPFP problem.

It could be a lot of things but I think you will pull a Po 242 code when you get it to the dealership. If you have an overtemp on the DPF the truck will do what you say it's doing.

I think it's going to be an overtemp fault of some sort. It happens with these engines quite a bit.

There is my crystal ball guess. Hope it makes you feel better.

I am starting to lean in your direction. I will keep my fingers crossed and it is something simple. Ford roadside set my attitude by stranding me for 4 hours on the side of a busy road and very little shoulder. Wife, two kids, and a dog. The first rep told the towing company we were a Class A and they could not do it. Two hours later Ford thought we were picked up and realized we were still sitting there. Someone really dropped the ball. So maybe I am a little soured because of this and am taking the glass is half empty attitude.

General advice.

Get yourself a super cheap code reader.

The cheapest code reader is better than none.

Here is an example of a $20 code reader:

The latest iteration of the 6.7 software logs the water in fuel indicator light.

Chances are so does the 6.4 software once it is upgraded.

So sure, drain the water (if any) and save it as a sample in a sealed, dated and photographed bottle in a video recorded procedure if possible.

Before I did anything I would wait and see what is wrong with your truck. May be nothing serious and Ford may fix it under warranty. Don't panic. Rick has everyone paranoid.

LOL... rick at work!

Just for the fun of it, I snooped around a bit on the European sites and asked about diesel warranty coverage.

The story is depressing.

If oil level fills crankcase (making oil), warranty is voided.

Same story re pump destruction.

Or, rather than having to go through all the BS...trade in the lemon.

First, I never said I agreed with the HPFP diagnosis. Too much additional information needed to pinpoint that issue.

Yes, Ford will fix some things under warranty. My truck has been back to the dealer 3 times for repairs after the warranty debacle.

As far as me driving the paranoia bus, I am hardly alone when it comes to Ford denials of HPFP failures on 6.7 and 6.4 diesels. The Ford sites have many documented instances of denied warranty with both engines. I am also well connected to the Ford diesel tech world. The honest techs will tell you the facts. The largest fact is that Ford requires all HPFP failures to be field evaluated prior to warranty coverage. Dealers are scared to death to do a HPFP warranty repair for even their best customers. The threat of warranty reimbursement denial is real...and scary...paranoid...not really...just living in the real world
