Finally tried to use my Progressive roadside assistance the other day. I was parked overnight at a Walmart and I went to check the tire pressure before I left the next am. As I put the gauge on the valve, it literally just broke off due to corrosion on the threads. Anyway, I thought it would be a quick fix for a roadside tire repair. Unfortunately, when I called Progressive, they informed me that their contract companies will only tow the vehicle to a local repair center. I begged and pleaded with the rep, and they said that that was their policy. I have a 42’ RV and the last thing I wanted them to do was tow me. So I told them to go scratch, and I called a local roadside truck repair and paid $150 for the 20 minute repair. I am not sore about paying the local guy, but I really thought that Progressive roadside would cover this repair. I don't know how much a tow would cost, but I could almost guarantee that it would be a lot more as well as delaying our trip a lot more in time. Oh well live and learn...dumping progressive roadside, and buying a real roadside service. I should know that you get what you pay for.

UPDATE: (7/23/12) after one of the board members suggested I write a letter to Progressive, I did. Well today I received an apology letter as well as a check for the full amount of the roadside service. I guess I have to retract my complaints about Progressive, and restore their status as exceptional. The letter stated that the customer service operator should have authorized the repair from the start, which is good to know for future roadside issues.

Sorry to hear they wouldn't help you.

I think it has to do that you have an A. I heard that most ers' won't/can't change Class A tires on the road. Although I think that is because most don't have a spare on board. Your problem had the word 'tire' in it so they mindlessly reverted to their chart that says tow.

Maybe if you insisted on going to the supervisor you might have gotten a better answer. I would submit your receipt to Progressive with a description of what happened, you might just get a refund.

If you paid $150 for a local repair, what is your deductable on the Progressive policy, and how far will they tow before you have to pay? Sounds like it was better to get if fixed by the local repair shop rather than have it towed.

Progressive ERS is unlimited to nearest facility. There is no deductible.

Thanks. Now I know what my $10 per year Progressive is good for and that is my major need so I am OK. If not in need of a tow I perfer to find the service provided from my own research if required.

I just looked at my Progressive policy and it makes no mention of Roadside service. It's for tow in only. Same as tow in for my auto's.

I carry Coachnet for Emergency Roadside Service. And yes Coachnet will dispatch a tire if you need one, but you must pay for the tire and labor. They also provide emergency transportation, tech support and a long list of other stuff. Well worth having them.

I probably over do it, but I have had AAA for my vehicles for years only because my vehicle insurance "tow in" did nothing more than offer a tow. Not much help when you run out of gas.

dont call them on a weekend... whatever a real roadside service costs... will seem cheap versus being on the roadside a few hours.
I drained a cell battery trying to find a company to tow me. Cost progressive over $4,000 with storage & fees.

After being Towed, have the front end alignment checked! I ruined both fronts in 200 miles after a tow.

I called progressive for a flat tire. They dispatched a fellow who came out dismounted the tire repaired the problem and remounted the tire. During the call I got two calls from progressive.. Once when the repair guy was there and after he left... So my limited experience has been a plus. This incident occurred several years ago...
