Wife is looking at the new Samsung 3 phone...but she read somewhere that her existing 4g unlimited plan (grandfathered in currently) would be lost, and she would have to go with the 2GB plan...I told her that I "thought" I had read that it was the 3G unlimited plan that was going away when you upgraded to 4g phones...So before she rushes out to get the new phone I told her I would check here as her calls to Verizon seems to have given her different answers by each person she talked to...
thanks

If you swap phones they will make you do a new plan, and no more unlimited plans are offered. They'll pry my unlimited 3G droid out of my cold dead fingers.

What has been posted thus far says it all. You can keep your grandfathered unlimited plan by purchasing a phone without a subsidy. So the Samsung Galaxy SIII is about $700 this way. Other pretty decent phones including used 4G phones can be bought from eBay or Craigslist and activated to keep the unlimited data also. That is the route I plan to take when I keep my UL plan later this year....

I'm Verizon and even if you keep your unlimited plan, it too will go away in two years. So enjoy the unlimited for that period of time, still a pretty good deal.

I have no idea where you came up with this information. Verizon's press announcements state that the unlimited plans can be continued as long as the customer understands that new phone prices will not be subsidized. It may well be true that eventually they will go away entirely, but I do not believe there has been any statement about them going away in two years.

We upgraded a couple of phones back in December. My wife went from a Blackberry to a Galaxy Nexus and my son went from a Samsung Rougue to the Galaxy Nexus. My wife was able to stay grandfathered with the unlimited data plan but my son was not. The reason they gave us was the grandfathering only applies when going from a smart phone to another smart phone. They considered the Blackberry a smart phone but not the Rougue.
There was no issue with the phones being subsidized as we upgraded after two years and were entitled to an upgrade.
My wife kept her unlimited plan and they gave my son a 4GB per month plan for the price of a 2GB plan. So far he has never used more than 1.5GB in any month but he keeps it in wifi mode at home to keep the data usage low.

Hardly any on the cell. It's the principal, you know.
The usb modem for the pc is 4g already and is a 5gig/mo plan. I hit that all the time, and go over a gig occasionally. $10/gig when I do.
