They are a cicada killer wasp. They will not bother you. They kill cicadas and dig holes. They may fly around a lot, that's all. The only place they are going to land is on the ground. They are not interested in you at all.
Leave them alone and they will leave you alone.
That is why you need to know what it is before you try to kill it.

That is 'exactly' what they look like. Have to admit though they sure do look menacing! AND I did find a dead cidada by the MH last night so I guess they are good at their job.
