RE: This would have saved me a lot of time

I was in school at the change from "old" to "New" math so I kind of learned both ways.
One of the stranger outcomes is I add a numbers left to right in most cases, Same as I read them.. Way easier.
I also do some fancy tricks that make many things easier.. Like to multiply by nine, Multiply by 10 and subtract one.
I am thinking you mean when "ADDING" as opposed to multiplying.
The multiplication trick with "nines" is this: Whatever you multiply by nine, you subtract one and the second digit is determined by subtracting the first digit from nine.
Example:
6 x 9 = (6-1) First digit is 5. Second digit is (9-5) 4
Answer is 54.
That trick works for digits 2-9. Stupid, easy trick for me to remember my 9s on the multiplication table.

RE: How do the full timers do it??

How do you full timers do it? I am starting to miss the open spaces of my house and land.
How do people in stick homes live in just one place?!;)
Former fulltimer here, desperately trying to get back to at least part-timing next summer when I retire from the Army. Our family can play nicely in 3,500 sq ft or 350 sq ft, we love the exploration!

RE: A real dilemma...

Maybe I am missing something but I don't see your question. You mentioned your mother is independent, in good health, doesn't want to live with you or your wife, and can drive.
Sounds like she is LIVING; let her live the way SHE wants and why don't you live the way YOU want? Go on your vacations--don't wait around for years for "something" to happen. Time is precious.

RE: Electric cars not viable

When they 1st came out, people thought:
automobiles
telephones
talking pictures
TV
would never last. Just sayin' :W
My wife worked at a bookstore in the. 1990s and when they transitioned to computers, an older employee used to moan and wail about what a waste of money they were and that "computers will be a passing fancy"!

RE: Electric cars not viable

I wouldn't call the electric car dead yet--have you checked out Tesla Motors?
They get 300 miles to the charge on their upper end model and 180 on their base model. Prices start at $45+ K. If they hold on for another 3-4 years, I intend to buy one.
When the BIG companies say its not doable, that's the wake up call for inventors and entrepreneurs.
While yes, a large sum of our energy is coal driven, as time and cost go up, the market forces will drive us to a more sustainable form of electricity.

RE: Continued Analysis

No offense taken with the Berkshire being last on your list. Buying an RV, particularly one that is as expensive as a diesel pusher, is a very personal choice and what is best for one can be the worst for someone else.
I looked at the Charleston bunk house when we toured the Forest River plant in August. The Charleston is nice, but I noticed that very few Forest River dealers seem to carry that unit. I'm not sure why, but I seem to see very few Charlestons around. I liked their bunk model when I saw it. My only concern with the Charleston is the use of only two A/C units on a 43' rig. Most rigs of that size use three A/C units. I don't know if that would be an issue or not, but it was something that I noticed.
Roger--the 3rd AC is an option that I will definitely order! Can you give me a POC you used for the factory tour? Did you just show up? Did you coordinate a visit with a rig being built? Where was the tour?

RE: Max length for RVs in Yellowstone NP

I would call them directly and inquire. We stayed at Fishing Bridge in a 39' fiver. The staff can tell u what if any sites will handle your rig. I tend to think it is possible but the sites would be limited so inquire early.
I have put my signature rig into Fishing Bridge multiple times, its tight, but I got it in. What I am considering is UPGRADING my 5er to a MH. The smallest MH in question is 39' 9" and the largest is 43' 6". While I don't want to make a rig purchase SOLELY on my ability to get into Yellowstone NP, I do want to know if I am too large and have to stay outside of the park.

RE: Continued Analysis

GreenSalsa, before jumping into the Tiffin pond you might want to spend a few days at the Tiffin RV Forum. Tiffin has had some major league issues with design flaws and quality control. These are not minor issues but major issues like cracked roofs, cracked sidewalls, slide issues and more. Read through many of the posts on that forum and then decide if you want to have a rig that may require you to spend weeks and even months in Red Bay, Alabama to get things fixed that never should have left the factory or the design table. Tiffin has a very loyal following, but for the kind of money we spend on these rigs, the last thing you would want is to take a chance that you would end up with a problem child.
As you continue your search, be sure to check out what the rig is like with the slides pulled in. When we looked for our unit, we noticed that one brand in particular was almost impossible to walk into the back with the slides in. We also noticed that the dinette was only big enough for one and half people on each side so that all four of us could not sit down for a meal together without being sandwiched into the dinette.
We have had good luck with our Berkshire, but I would also encourage you to read through the Forest River Forum for problems or concerns with the Berkshires. In our case, both Forest River and our dealer, RVOne have been very good at handling any issues we have had.
Thanks for the input. I have noticed a very loyal Tiffin and as you saw I am asking people for the reasons for their loyalty. The Berkshire is realistically only last because of the concerns I have with "semi-fulltiming" in Forest Rivers "entry level" Motor home.

Max length for RVs in Yellowstone NP

There used to be a link / page with the maximum lengths for RV in Yellowstone NP Campgrounds--I cant find it? Can someone point me to the right site? I am seriously considering a 43 ft rig and am worried I will not be able to fit into any site INSIDE the park. I know I can fit in a lot of commercial sites but we really like staying IN the park.

RE: Continued Analysis

Thanks all for the quick replies. In our analysis of the products, I have found this to be a consistent comment with regards to Tiffin. Can anyone point to something other than anecdotal loyalty?
Are the Tiffin comments based off of customer service only? Construction? What separates the Phaeton from the Charleston with regards to construction? What am I missing?
Not trying to be argumentative, really just looking for answers and VERY appreciative of the viewpoints!

Continued Analysis

Hello all, looking for advice.
I am a former fulltimeer, 2 years in my signature rig with my family. My daughters are now 9 and 11 and we have acquired a dog too!
As I look down the road to military retirement, I have a unique job opportunity. I am being strongly considered to work from early July to early December in California teaching at a university and then work from January to early June in North Carolina doing the same thing. I have a home in NC and my kids are going to school in NC. I am considering trading out my signature rig for a Full-Time class A bunk DP to live in while we are in California.
As I said before, we have previous full time experience, everyone in the family wants this to happen but which rig to choose? Based off of our experience several factors are important, cost (always), rig reputation, power, size of the rig, bunk space, interior storage, interior craftsmanship are our primary factors.
A one thing first, I know buying new will be costly, I know that I could save money by buying a 1 year, 18 month, 2 year old rig, but I want piece of mind knowing the dealer will take care of the rig and stand behind a warranty.
All that said, reading this forum and visiting several shows (last one being the Tampa RV show), we have narrowed the list down, in order, to the Forest River Charleston, Fleetwood Discovery 40G, Tiffin Phaeton, and bringing up the distant rear, the Forest River Birkshire.
We have taken the following off the list Newmar Ventana, Fleetwood Expedition, Fleetwood Discovery 42A, Tiffin Allegro RED, and the American Revolution 42T (modified rear bunks).
What I am asking is two things:
One, are we missing anything we should be considering?
Two, do you have recommendations or cautions on the rigs we mentioned?

RE: Reservations or no for Sept Outside of Yellowstone

For Yellowstone I would say Grizzly RV in West Yellowstone. I found it to be very nice. We were there in late September without reservations. Had no problem getting a nice spot for our stay. I did not find the drive into and around Yellowstone that bad from Grizzly RV Park.
