RE: This is the end of May, Memorial Day weekend, Right?

We don't plan any trips to Crater Lake early in the summer. One year we visited on the 4th of July weekend and they had just finished digging out the road around the rim of the crater. We had plans of Crater Lake next week & driving the rim. Looking at the forecast, change of plans. We will head for the coast. Record cold has been with us ever since we started 6 weeks ago in MD.

RE: Hello Ram 1500 Diesel!

They were supposed to start building Grand Cherokees with the ecodiesel engine early this year and it looks like they have been pushed back to Aug. or Sept. It sounds like there was some kind of glitch in getting EPA approval. I wonder if this will delay the ecodiesel option for the Ram 1500.

RE: Taking advantage of the stupid!

I guess that's why we have choices in vehicles. My sister's little Nissan was more awkward for me to get in and out of than a Jeep Wrangler. I'm only 5' 7" and I couldn't even sit up straight in her back seat without my head touching the rear window.

RE: Anybody besides me using old school WD hitch?

I use the standard spring bar for weight distribution and a single friction bar for sway control. I've towed fairly short trailers and sway hasn't been a problem .

RE: Traveling in Tornado prone areas

Keep that map with you if there is a forecast for severe weather. We had severe weather during the first camping trip my wife and I went on together (before we were married) when all we had was a tent. The radio station was broadcasting watches and warnings and I had to run from the tent to the car in torrential rain to get the map. My advice? KNOW the county you are in when driving. Weather alerts are always given per County locations, which County a tornado is headed, which County's will be affected by severe storms, etc. This was MY first scary revelation when a tornado alert came out. I had NO idea what County I was in while traveling down the road. So I couldn't tell if I was driving IN to it or away from it. :R I now have a big color coded county map for each state. When I am putting together my trip routing for the day I also mark it on the county map. Getting off the interstate is the FIRST thing you should do. I try to find a building wall to get up against with the MH. That and don't park near or under trees! I've been thru 3 while driving down the road and survived all of them only to have a tornado touch down in the CG I was staying at.

RE: Seems like they all do this

I guess it simplifies things on the assembly line. Some people aren't happy that in order to get a diesel in a 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited, you also have to spend an extra $3,000 (MSRP) on a luxury package.

RE: Words That Melt My Brain

So what if schools don't teach penmanship. Cursive writing is about as useful as knowing how to use a slide rule. :)

RE: Luxury Diesel SUV as tow vehicle

The 2014 Grand Cherokee has a maximum tongue weight of 720 lbs according to the owner's manual. The same rating is listed in my 2008 owner's manual. 2WD models have an extra 20 lbs of tongue weight rating. That is 12% of 6,000 lbs, but doesn't leave much room for payload (including passengers) before reaching GVWR of the Jeep I'm guessing the original poster isn't interested in the 2014s since he's looking for slightly used SUVs.

RE: 1T Pickup special rules and regulations?

Are you sure they have a 9,000 lb. weight restriction on an interstate highway? Maybe it's 90,000 lbs. As always, thanks for the quick and informative replies. No concerns about weigh stations. I have a call into MNDot about a GVW restriction on a section of I35 through St. Paul (>9000lb trucks are prohibited, but buses and RVs are OK...not sure if this means I can't drive a 3500 p/u there or not). Otherwise it looks to me like I can drive this pretty much the way I drive my car (but much more comfortably :) ). Thanks again!

RE: Signs of the Times

The new Grand Cherokees don't even have a CD player as standard equipment. The optional player fits in the console so you lose valuable storage room. Not that I really care since I use the memory card instead.

RE: 10 Worst States for Retirement!

It's not like all of Oregon is colder than average. The high desert east of the Cascades gets cold in the winter and hot in the summer while the western portion has warmer winters and cooler summers. It would be a big job to accurately compare taxes and fees for every state. Sure, we have high income tax in Oregon, but we have no sales tax and property taxes are less than what my relatives in the Midwest pay for similar homes. Auto registrations are also cheap here. My sister lives not too far from the beach in Los Angeles and she doesn't have to spend money heating or cooling her condo. She's owned it for over a decade and has never used the air conditioning or heating system.

RE: Senior Driving

Then there is the time I heard about a wrong-way driver on my police scanner so I called Grandma's cell phone to warn her about the driver since it was near her house. She replied: "It's not just one wrong-way driver. There are hundreds of them!"

RE: my small town

After I was severely injured in a car accident, the ambulance transferring me from the rural hospital to the "big city" of Bismark, N.D., was held up for a few minutes until the cattle in open range country moved off the highway.

RE: Jeep Liberty Towing??

Many Jeeps had different axle ratios along with a transmission cooler as part of the factory tow package so it's actual towing capacity may be around 3,500 lbs. I learned that the hard way back in 2002. :)

RE: Scary Towing Sights This Week...

Our 23 foot trailer has a GVWR of about 6,100 so even it was fully loaded, we would only be at 85% of the weight rating for our Grand Cherokee. Trailer sway hasn't been an issue with our old 19' trailer or this one.

RE: Can my Toyota Tundra handle this trailer.

We saw the Endeavor on display last weekend and watched the movie documenting the move through Los Angeles. The Tacoma was only in one brief scene and it looks like all it did was pull the shuttle on a freeway overpass and waste 8 hours changing out the equipment used for the rest of the move. Linky I don't see any issue with your tundra and that trailer. If you would have gotten the bigger engine, then you could have towed the space shuttle.

RE: There WERE a few things about the "good old days"...

Toys didn't require batteries. All of my toys were kid-powered until I was in jr. high and started playing with remote controlled cars when I had spending money from my paper route.

RE: There WERE a few things about the "good old days"...

Back to the original post about things that were better in the good old days... We used to ride our bikes all over and nobody worried about us getting kidnapped. We played different sports throughout the year instead of playing one sport year-round. We also had free time to make up our own games or just play kickball in the neighbor's yard instead of getting sent from one organized activity to another all day long.

RE: Snow switch

At least the snow should help minimize drought concerns, at least where the ground isn't still frozen solid.

RE: My last time in Best Buy

Was the card still in the original packaging when she put it into the clear bag? If so, then there should have been no restocking fee.
