RE: Measuring Generator Output

MrWizard is spot on. Sounds like this electrician could very well be the next member of the "the electrician said oops" club....

RE: Bike Rack Question?

When we upgraded to XPS Ribs, the bumper was not adequate to carry the new spare, let alone anything else. We had a need for not only the spare, but for bikes and a generator. Had this rack custom fabricated by a trailer builder. On our first trip out with the bikes to Myrtle Beach- we had too many people for the truck, so the DW drove behind- the bike rack had some movement, specifically vertically on the left and right ends. Solved that problem by getting a couple of threaded rods and a handful of nuts and washers to attach as shown here. On the return trip it was very stable, no movement at all. http://inlinethumb30.webshots.com/21085/2244153910101031474S600x600Q85.jpg

RE: Is this a indication?

I would have taken it as a sign that I should take my business elsewhere- anything that is that hard to do is just not meant.

RE: Can I use PI EMS 50 with 30 Amp RV ?

Thanks to all who posted, and LarryJM, I really like your idea. Realistically we probably won't switch to a new trailer (unless we win a lottery or something), and the twin 30's seems like a good compromise. I don't suppose you would get any flak from any campground owner as you are still using less than a 50 amp service would provide, so at most you should be charged no more than the 50 amp service costs.

Can I use PI EMS 50 with 30 Amp RV ?

Thinking ahead here, to either of the following 2 possibilities, we either upgrade our 30 Amp RV for 50 Amp service or we upgrade to a new RV with 50 Amp Service. So the question becomes is it worthwhile to purchase the HW50C and use it with the present 30 Amp RV? Thoughts please.

RE: EMS, GFCI, Shore, Genny related thoughts

I do not believe the Champion has the ability to shutdown for out of range voltage and frequency, that is probably my largest concern, having an AVR issue. I know it's rare, but have read at least one posting. I'm putting together the homemade GFCI that the Professor talks of here. I'm having a difficult time finding both pigtails at the local wallyworld. Found one the other day. So, thinking I'll probably go with the PI w/remote display, the GFCI and bonding the Champ.

EMS, GFCI, Shore, Genny related thoughts

So, the PI EMS will protect from power issues on shore power, will only be able to protect from generator power if the bond is made from neutral to ground at the input. If the bond is done, it allows one fault vs 2 to allow an issue if something goes wrong in the rv wiring. The GFCI will work with either (bonded or not), so should not be a concern at all in it's use. So, I'm thinking of the following: Power source (either Post or Generator) to GFCI first, PI EMS second. I suppose the real question is what is most important, having that 2nd fault barrier with an unbonded generator and not having protection from potential generator issues or being 1 fault away from a potential by bonding the generator and protecting against any potential generator issues? I'm leaning towards bonding the generator...

RE: WFCO 8955 Upgrade Advice

I seem to recall reading something about if the size of the wire is not sufficient, there will be issues in being able to use all available charge modes. I thought I read this about this unit, and that in fact it is a good 3-stage unit if wired properly.

RE: did you take anything out? what didn't you need in the RV

I found I could save a bunch of weight if I left the M-I-L at her house....you know, it was much more peacefull, too. I know where you are at.... I'm there too. Sometimes you gotta leave the excess baggage, told the DW that MIL could go on no more than 1 of every 4 trips. Well see how that goes. Oh, and we removed the two mandatory optional swivel rockers that came with the trailer, and swapped out the uncomfortable loveseat uncomfortable hideabed for a dual recliner loveseat.

RE: Grounding Generators

Sorry to have re-opened the can..... While it's open, seems the local wally worlds (2) do not have the 30-15 and 15-30 adapter cables that professor95 used to build the gfci. I did manage to purchase everything else though. Should be able to find them on ebay or somewhere. I've learned enough from reading these threads to put this unit in place. Thanks!

RE: Firestone or Pacbrake air bags????

We bought our "no drill" Firestone Ride Rights from Summit Racing, at that time (Jan 2008) was the best price ($257) and shipping was free and quick. I was not as quick as some on the install, but it wasn't very difficult. Prior post on the install with pics

RE: What would you pay?

Why buy used when you can buy new? Have you checked the prices at RV Direct and RV Wholesalers? Bought our FW loaded for little money, saved alot, the trip to pick it up in Elkhart, IN was well worth it.
