RE: Almost Time to Leave

We are waiting to for full daylight to decide whether to leave today or wait until Friday. I'm not sure if we can get out of the driveway, there's lots snow drifted in. Since the driveway is 300', that can be a problem.

RE: Almost Time to Leave

SO
Good thinking on delaying departure. Wednesday sounds like a mess here (southern Maine), 4-8 inches of snow before changing to rain/freezing rain, very windy. Not a fun RVing day.
If you get to Bangor, check out Dysarts truck stop (exit 180) plenty of place to park, great food.
Your travel route is one of the best, especially now that it sounds like I-78 has been fixed. Happy trails.....
We always stop at Dysart's when we travel through Maine. Only for food though but I have it on my mental list as a possible overnight stop. It will depend on how late it is when we hit the US/Canada border.

RE: Almost Time to Leave

Have a great trip, SO... Watch the forecast carefully as there is some weather headed this way (Maine) Wednesday into Thursday. After that, with any luck, several good days. You might want to time your departure with that in mind. What route are you taking? Where are you planning to stay your first few nights? Outside of overnighting in a parking lot, your options this time of year are almost nil. I'm wrestling with these issues myself, and currently looking at leaving for FL on Friday, after the storm has passed and the roads are clear and dry.
After doing another check on the forecast, we may wait and leave on Thursday. We will probably overnight in Houlton or Bangor for the first night, depending on how the day goes. After that it will be where ever we can find. We will be going down I95 until 495, then 90 to 84 to 287 to 78 to 81. We are trying to avoid major metro areas and staying out of the mountains.

Map Pictures

My map pictures show places where I have taken a trailer. That's why I don't have NWT, Yukon, Quebec or Newfoundland coloured in. I've been there but not RV'd. What do other people do? Just show areas where you have RV'd or do you show everywhere you have been? Obviously this is one of those personal preference things but I am curious.

Almost Time to Leave

The plan is that we will be leaving here on Wednesday morning, heading for Florida. we are allowing up to 10 days to get there so that we can stop for a day or so along the way.
I had hoped that the snow would stay away until after we had left but no luck. There isn't much on the ground, maybe 10 cm. I hope that I don't have trouble moving the the 5er from where it has been parked up onto the driveway.
The slide was out when the snow came so I may have to climb up and clean it off before bringing it in. I'll run a heater in the 5er today and see if the snow melts off.
The last time that I made a trip that long with a trailer was back in the eighties and most of this trip will be through new territory for me, so a bit nervous. It'll be fine. We will be taking it easy, especially after we get out of the snow areas.

RE: Canadian BofA account application problem

RBC US gives us a US bank account plus credit and debit cards. We can easily transfer money from our Canadian account to our US account by calling their call centre.

RE: Canadian BofA account application problem

I'm a little bit concerned. Last evening I got a call from a person claiming to represent RBC US as my personal banker. He had my phone no., address, cell no., correct name. He followed up with an email with my account no. and wants my mother's maiden name plus for me to fax signature samples to him. It's probably all genuine but I think I'll do some checking before sending him any information.
What's the latest. Is everything legit? Are you still investigating?
I did some careful checking and the call was legit.

RE: Just so you don't forget

Some of us Canadians are ashamed of our country's dumb-ass gun laws but from what I have heard crossing into the US while carrying is also a no-no. Both countries would be better served if we focused on the coastlines and left the 49th parallel wide open.
I haven't met anyone in this country who disagrees with the handgun restrictions. Some of the recent laws regarding long guns are a whole different issue. I'm sure that here are Canadians that don't like the handgun laws but I haven't met them and I suspect that they are a very small minority.
I think that there is too much focus on the gun restrictions in Canada. I believe that you will find the same restrictions if you visit many countries. It is the USA that is the exception when it comes to handguns not Canada.

RE: So who's in the Snowbird class of 09/10

We're leaving next Wednesday. Still lots of things to do but it's all coming together. We had a little bit of snow overnight so that really helps to motivate me to get things done.

RE: Christmas rant

Many years ago we took a stand on this sort of thing. My wife's family has always exchanged gifts - everyone gave to everyone. We had young kids, I was an A/Cpl in the RCAF and we simply couldn't afford to do it. We said so and it turned out that all of the younger people in the family were in the same situation as we were and everyone was so glad to stop the tradition. Apparently many had felt as we did but were reluctant to speak out.

RE: Staying in a motel

Strange! None of that reflects my experiences. Yes, I too like my RV but when we stayed in motels they were almost always very clean. Mind you we didn't look for the cheapest. We would stay good to medium level places and never had a complaint.

RE: Does anyone use the storage under queen sized bed?

One problem is I stored the booze under it, then one night my wife went to bed early and I decided to have a stiff drink. No way was I going to wake her up and I sure couldn't lift the bed anyway!.
Now that's bad planning!!:)

RE: Traveling to Nova Scotia

You only pay to leave PEI. Both the ferry and the bridge are free when arriving.
The real truth is that tolls are only collected once but then you pay double but it sounds nicer to say "free" on entering. The ferry is more expensive than the bridge so we advise people to come via the ferry and leave via the bridge. Ferry traffic is down so I'm not sure on the situation currently but historically, during the summer, line ups for the ferry are common.

RE: Traveling to Nova Scotia

I'm really sorry you didn't enjoy yourself here. No, this isn't New York, we don't go for the bright lights but if you like beaches, scenery, birding or history, we have a lot to offer. Visit the historic village, see a play at the Confed. Centre or the Mack, try the tiny jewel-like playhouses that are scattered around, go to a ceilidh, enjoy a lobster dinner or perhaps you prefer mussels or oysters. Bike the 275 km Confederation Trail. Kickback and relax. I normally live here 12 months of the year and never have to worry about finding things to do.

RE: Canadian BofA account application problem

RBC US is an American bank. My account with them will be located in the USA, it is not just US dollar account at a Canadian bank. Catchingcampers and I are referring to the same type of account, I believe. I didn't go for a credit card just wanted a debit card to use in ATMc etc plus cheques.

Take the ferry to get here and leave via the bridge. You only pay to leave here and the bridge is cheaper than the boat.
