RE: Why don't 5th wheel mfgrs place more heavy items in rear?

FWIW if I tow with the toys onboard my pin weight percentage drops from 22% to 19%. However the ride improves considerably with less chucking and jerking. This is on a 15,000 lb. toyhauler. So perhaps adding weight to the pin may not always improve the ride. Too much of anything is rarely a good thing.

RE: Running frig while driving

We start ours a day or two before we put anything in it but don't run it while travelling. Just never found it necessary so we don't.

RE: Dealer requires suitable truck

I'm confused. When did one have to own a truck in order to buy a trailer? I'ts good that a dealer would be concerned though.

RE: dumping fresh water question

Coming from a place that gets over 60 inches of rain a year, an argument over the etiquette of dumping a few gallons of fresh water on the ground kind of makes me chuckle.

RE: dumping fresh water question

Good thing these folks don't know airliners drain their grey water overboard. Oops. On older planes like the 727, the grey did go overboard regardless of whether the jet was on the ground or in the air. The drain mast was heated to avoid freezing in flight. Modern jets do not. 25 year airline Captain. Can't speak to the 777 and later but the 767 still had them when I retired in 06. So did the 747-200, DC10-30 and A310-200 when I was flying them. The new B787 does not have drain masts. All greywater goes into black tank. Pretty sure the A380 is the same. Probably new rules. Interesting. Doesn't really surprise me but I wonder how much good it will actually do. Cost the airlines a few bucks in extra fuel each year as well. Must have grated a little bit at Boeing when the primary objective with the 787 was reduced weight and fuel consumption.

RE: Grease or Disks for 5th Wheel Hitch Plates?

Been using the same teflon disc since 02. Paint isn't even worn off the hitch plate.

RE: 28-32 mpg w/ diesels??

All four of my Cummins Rams, one manual, three auto, two 4.10 and two 3.55 all gave 19 hwy, 18.5~ very light city and 10.5~ towing mostly around the southeast. Some people love to talk bull biscuits. Pretty much my experience with my 01 CTD. I did get around 11.5 towing 10k though I did get 50 at times with my 04 Jetta TDI with manual trany but that was Imperial gallons. More like mid 40's per USG.

RE: King Pin Leveling Tripod?

We are using the Winfield Stabilizer. Clicky Been very satisfied with it. Bill Wow, 200 clams for 20 bucks worth of tubing. But thanks for the link, that will be easy to build myself. :) There is some engineering involved there too. :) But if you can build it yourself for 20 bucks, more power to you. Bill My thought as well. We also use the Winfield and like it. Installs in less than 30 minutes with just two wrenches.

RE: Feeling really foolish!

I have heard that pilots that fly with retractable landing gear have landed with gear up or will do so in the future. Quite rare but it does happen. There is a lot of float plane traffic in my part of the world and some of them have amphibious floats (floats that contain retractable landing gear). Every few years someone takes off from land, forgets to retract the gear then lands on the water. The next day you might see a newpaper picture of an upside down pair of floats, floating in the water with the landing gear sticking up. I once tried to drive a VW camper into my garage with the pop top up. Fortunately the only casualty was the canvas.

RE: Didn't your mama ever tell you to remove your hat ? RANT

It depends on what their rules of etiquette are. If their rules are that my wife must cover her face and not speak unless spoken to, then no I would not follow them. If their rules are to take of your shoes before entering the house, then yes I'd do it. And I think you are misunderstanding what I wrote. I clearly said there are things that are common sense when it comes to manners and I gave examples. But please tell me how wearing a baseball hat at IHop is hurting anybody and why should it be considered bad manners? What you or I consider common sense has nothing to do with manners. The point is, we don't get to choose what offends others just as they don't get to choose what offends us. If we want respect, we have to show it. It is bad manners if it offends the majority of the people who are there. Everything isn't always about us.

RE: Didn't your mama ever tell you to remove your hat ? RANT

The "why worry about this when some other things are so much worse" logic always seems come up to justify almost anything, including bad manners. My question would be, are good manners just something we might display at our convenience, or something we actually believe in? Back to my original question, why is it bad manners? Who gets to decide? Is it bad manners "because it's always been that way?" It's alleged to be bad manners if you put your elbows on the table. I do it and I see others do it all the time. Should people get all upset over that too? That begs the question, what are manners anyway? Are they just what individuals decide they are on their own? In my mind they are a set of rules that give us guidance as to what is acceptable behavior when it comes to showing proper respect for our fellow human beings. Not following those guidelines shows disrespect whether they make any sense to us or not. Similar to deciding which laws we choose to obey. If you are invited to a home in a foreign country (or someone from a different culture in your own country), would you try and follow their rules of etiquette or just say, screw you, this is the way I do it regardless of how offensive that may be to them?

RE: cruise advice

We prefer balcony with our floor sandwiched between two other passenger floors. Forward, middle, back. doesn't really matter to me. Just get me on the boat.. X2 Motion doesn't bother us but the higher you go the more you will feel any roll and pitching is less in the middle of the ship.

RE: How do you hook up your 5th by yourself?

I think if I had to go through the rigeramole the OP mentioned I would probably start looking to trade in for a TT. As mentioned before, my 10yr old Reese double jaw is pretty simple. I have blue tape down in the center of the hitch plate which makes it easier as I can see through the back window to line up with the pin. Once close, I get out to unlock the hitch and set the pin height. When backing under, I want the hitch plate to lift the FW about an inch. This prevents high hitching. After the jaws snap shut, I get out to make sure the jaws are closed and lock the hitch. I painted the jaws white which makes it easier to see that they are closed around the pin. Hook up the breakaway and electrical and do the pull test. None of this procedure requires that my feet leave the ground and that's one big reason why I like a Fiver.I had a small TT 30 years ago and remember it being harder to line up the ball with out help, at least the 5th has a V in the hitch to guide you in I used to think so to but the back up camera on my new truck makes hooking up my utility trailer dead easy.

RE: Portable Grill comparisons...

I also think the Baby Q is good value. If I have a dislike, it's that you can't turn the heat down low enough to slow cook.

RE: What are most common greenhorn mistakes?

Don't forget to give your dear wife something to do also, so you can check what she did, and she can check what you did. X2. Make it a team effort and back each other up. Smashing head on pin box doesn't seem to be a greenhorn mistake for me. Watch out for that sucker.

RE: dumping fresh water question

There are reasons for draining a tank other than sanitizing. I see little difference where you do it. Last trip of the season. Sometimes you have to fill up in places where the water is so hard it isn't fit for drinking so you want to get rid of the remaining water on the way home or next destination. I once stopped at a service station that had a dump site which I knew had pretty good potable water in the past and was reasonably close to my destination. After filling my water tank, I pulled around to fill up with diesel. When I went in to pay there was a boil water advisory pinned to the wall. My drain valve was open for the next 50 miles.

RE: dumping fresh water question

Airplanes do not dump their waste in flight. That is an old Internet rumor. http://www.faa.gov/news/fact_sheets/news_story.cfm?newsid=6659 Actually they do. There are heated drain masts on the belly of the aircraft that are used to drain the grey water from lav sinks and galleys overboard. Black water is retained and emptied on the ground.
