Now that the big 4 has sold everybody and large diesel pickup, how long before they will switch most to a mid size diesel pickup, and tell us it is bigger inside, and longer on the outside, and will pull more, for less.

Hi: Good question. The big three seem to be retooling to make small autos. I fact we the tax payers will help them out with loams. I have a Dodge 2500 diesel and have no plans to trade down or sell my 30 foot 5th wheel. We just spend more time at the camp ground and less on the road. Happy Camping. Jim20097

Toyota just made a recent announcement that sounds like they are backing off on going the diesel route as soon as the American Three.
Actually it looks like Nissan's Titan maybe the 4th maker with the American one's to go the small displacement diesel-route. They will be using a Dodge platform with Nissan Titan skin with their 2010 Titan, and will have the capacity to handle the 5.0 liter Cummins V8 diesel along with the 1/2 ton Ram. Looks like a win-win situation for Nissan and for Dodge, as Dodge is going to get a Nissan Versa platformed itineration with a Dodge badge.
The smaller displacement diesels need to come quicker than is currently being mentioned by the vehicle makers. I believe they are all scheduled to debut in 2010, but in my opinion, it should be in 2009 if possible. Maybe there will be some late or end of year 2009 diesels that come on the market?

Hmmm... Ford came out with the new 6.0 PSD too soon and look at what happened to their reputation. I don't think anyone is stupid enough to do that again anytime soon.

If they don't straighten out the regen problems with present models it may be longer. Aren't stiffer standards still to come?

I still think people are gonna have a hard time paying the extra cash for the diesel option engine (especially in a smaller truck)-it adds around 7grand to my vehicle purchase price-yikes!

Time will tell, but I think you are exactly right. I do not think the mileage numbers will be a good as what people think. You can by alot of gas for $5000 to $7000 dollars. Secondly that will put the small diesel 1/2 ton in the same price range as a 3/4 ton diesel. If you intend on using it as a TV why not get the 3/4 ton? JMO

I think some stupid decisions by gm are partly to blame for their problems today. Such as axing the s-10 for the funky looking, not very refined mid size and now having no small truck in the line up is a bad move because there will always be a market for small trucks. I have a big truck for the big jobs and a small one for daily driving that is handy to haul some things when I need to and it is good on gas. Most people have no use for a mid size... too small for the big jobs and too heavy and unefficient for everyday use.
Small turbo diesels in little trucks that get 35 mpg would have sold like mad the last few years while big trucks sat assuming they were affordable like 12-15k.
Just my two cents!

Soon. Diesel is the way to go. 30% more efficient than gas in all conditions (up to 70% more efficient when loaded), and the engines put out more power, and last longer.
All that's left is educating the public to these facts, and getting them away from the ideas they have about old diesels.
