If I go shopping for an air compressor , a portable type, what is the minimum gallons it should have? Is there such an item at the likes of WalMart or Autozone or SamsClub that is under $100 or so. If you know an exact item I would be very appreciative. But if I get the compressor, as I understand it, I would also need a plug for blowing it out. I have some little piece of brass with blue on it that I think is what was intended.
Will the air compressor run a minute or so, then I need to wait for it to refill and so on, correct? to do this blowing out? Since I can't use a big standing garage type that is huge.
I would be grateful for a specific item recommendation or two or three from regular type stores I can access easily and quickly.
Thank you here so very much. SAT.

I just pre-winterized yesterday and blew all the water of the system after draining and flushing everthing.
Sears $100 compressor set handles this easy. Also used for trailer, bike, and car tires so this isn't another one of Chuck's stupid camping expenses!

Set to 50 psi:

Connected to the trailer:

Adapter made with plastic plug with 1/2" hole in it. The metal threaded connector screws directly into the plastic.

That's it.
Up until yesterday I used a tire valve adapter but I saw another post here describing the adapter. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery -- thanks for the idea!

I use a Husky 1.5 gal (2.0CFM at 90 PSI). It has plenty of volume for winterizing the rig. Bought it for around $100 at Home Depot.
Chuck, how did you tap the adapter? I also made an adapter but it has more parts than yours.

So if I get one of these Husky or Sears, I would have everything I need to do it (albeit I could do it easier if I figured out how to make some other kind of thing or ordered some other kind of thing plug thing) ?

I see you have the compressor hooked up to the city water fill, if ours are the same trailers. So you just drain the fresh water storage tank and then blow the air through the city water fill opening? Do you also blow into the drain plug of the fresh water tank? What about the storage tanks? And the water heater? you blow through the space where the rod goes into the water heater? After the water has run out of that hole , I guess duh? That wasn't worded good by me. I'm just feeling so overwhelmed as to what to do because I'm afraid it will freeze and yet the kids really want to go out for 4 nights Halloween weekend but we could use bottled water to wash, cook, drink and flush I guess

Hopper -- I didn't tap the plastic cap, it's soft enough for the quick disconnect to self tap itself into the plastic. This is a soft, not brittle cap.
Sarah -- I drain the waste water tanks before and any antifreeze can just to in the waste tanks. Won't hurt.
The water heater is just drained by pulling the anode -- and putting it back when the tank is empty. Bypass is before putting antifreeze in the system.

Sarah,
Instead of fretting and worrying about this and spending a whole bunch of money for a compressor, tubing, fittings, etc., why don't you just take your trailer to a nearby RV dealer and pay them a few bucks to winterize it for you. I bet it would be less than $100 to have them do the job. You will probably spend at least that much on the equipment and supplies mentioned above. Then, next year, during the year as you learn more about your trailer, you can learn more about the process, which is very easy but must be done right, and then do it yourself next year. Perhaps you could also find a nearby shop who would send someone to your place or even a neighbor who is an experienced RVer. Just a suggestion.

Barney, I know that's easier but I have schedule issues (no nearby places work on Saturdays and I work usually 12 hour shifts and then there's the kids things) but more so, I just want so much to learn how to do all this stuff because their dad would have done it, and I want them to feel like even though he is gone now, things are not so abnormal . I know it can't be real difficult once I have done it and have that actual experience understanding of it, surely. I'm just nervous the first times. Thanks

I have the same compressor as Chuck S and here is the Sears link. It usually comes on sale every few months for 89-99.00. The great thing about this one is it can be used to air your trailer and tow vechicle tires and can be moved or carried fairly easy. I would not worry too much about freezing until we get where the daytime highs are only in the upper 40's. A few nights where it just gets to 31-32 for only a few hours won't be enough to break anything. Randy
On edit, I just looked at some of the past posts and it appears that you may already have a compresser in the garage. No need to buy something if you already have it although it might not be portable.

Do air compressors need to be winterized? I thought that moisture gets into their tanks. Just curious.
