My '97 Dodge 3500 diesel has two 27H-XHD batteries. One tests good and the other has a shorted cell. The auto repair shop says I should replace both at the same time even though one is still good.

What do you recommend?

I agree, replace both at the same time. That old battery can dramatically impact the new one and your system overall. Not worth the chance.

There are two options....

One: when the cell shourted it took the good battery down below 12 volts

Two: A fuse blew and protected the good battery (I have never seen a rig fused that way)

I do not know of anyone who makes a true deep cycle Group 27. Marine/deep cycle is as good as I've seen. these are closer to starting batteries

I've taken the odd starting battery down to 10-11 volts.. and promptly bought a new one cause you can only do that one time on a starting battery and to date i've not gotten away with it.

Now DEEP CYCLE's... I've had survive harsh treatment. but never a starting or Marine/deep cycle type.

So I'd repalce 'em

I'd replace 'em with a pair of six volt golf car batteries if you have the room. You will pick up at least 10-20 percent more capacity and possible save some green in the process.. Sams or Costco have the best prices but you have to ask for them.. They can be hard to find.

Ideally you want to batteries who have comparable ability which argues for buying two at the same time. With that said when I have problem with one battery I don't replace both unless the other one is marginal.

Another way to look at it is like a tow chain. It is only as strong as its weakest link.

Trojan SCS series available in Gr 24,27 and 30 something are true deep cycle batteries.

Replace both unless the other battery is less than six mounths old. Six months won't matter unless it was bad to start with.
