I would like your opinion about thousand trails or other campground memberships. We almost brought a TT membership last year then notied that they can be purchased for about half (even after paying the transfer fee) from a person reselling it themselves. Does anyone have experience buying a membership from an individual? Also other than TT what other memberships do you recommend? We live in NC but plan to travel cross country for about 6 months next year.

Get the membership number, call member services to get all info on it before you buy. Watch the Escapees forum, many times people give their memberships away rather than turn them in to TT.

Craigslist, ebay, loads of places offer them cheap. Before committing to buy, you have to call TT, give them the membership number and they will tell you what the membership includes. Some are stand alone, others include NACO and some include ELS. Some allow 7 days in/ 7days out. Others allow moving from park to park. Make a list and ask the same questions when you call. We have been satisfied with our purchase. $480 bucks and seller paid xfer fee......Dennis

First, look closely at the membership. Will you use it enough to make it worth having? I had Good Sam and KOA memberships, and used neither enough to make it worth while for me, so I allowed them to expire.
A membership for almost $500 that I might use once a year, or once every two years? No, thanks!
If you will use it, great. For me, it would be a total waste.

Only thing I know, from folks that heave them. Is that once you do. You can't give them away. Even if you try to pay them to take them.
Also know. that when you buy a RV from TJs. You are given for free a TT menbership. You only have to pay the yearly maintance fee. Something like $400.00 per year. I told them NO thanks.
I did get to stay in one of the two Thousand Trails in NC. It was very nice. But not worth the money to get a membership.

I just purchased a resale membership from an existing member for Sunrise Resorts and paid pennies on the dollar compared to buying direct from Sunrise. The transaction with the out of state seller was done completely over the internet with the exception of mailing one check each to the seller and Sunrise. CAUTION! Be sure to get the membership number from the seller and contact "Membership Services" with the resort and confirm the type of membership the seller has. Each resort sells different types of memberships and the benefits will vary greatly. It took me three tries until I found an owner selling a membership to suit my needs. Good luck!

Here are some links where I found plenty of memberships for sale.

If you use it at least 30 or so nights/year I think it's definitely worth it. I see in NC there are more than 6 parks, so you should find something you like there. Here in Calif we also have several but you won't find too many in central US if you're traveling. For my money a used membership at 1K or so plus transfer fee of 750 plus your years dues of about 500 is not a bad deal. Full hookup sites are generally going for $30 or more in most parks nowadays. My opinion, of course. Others may have different ideas.

We bought into ThousandTrails in 2003. We took a ten thousand mile tour around the country and we used TT most of the time and in the seven days we had to be off we used RPI. It paid for itself in the first six months. I figured that if I didn't belong to some kind of membership that it would cost me over one thousand dollars every month paying for camp grounds. We really use our memberships and it has made it posible for us to travel from the west coast to the east coast without paying for staying in these preserves.
It is true that you can get some good deals on these private preserves. People die all the time and their memberships are sold at great discounts. If you are lucky enough to find something like that, I say go for it. They are well worth the money if you are going to use your motorhome. But if you are not going to use your coach but one week out of the year, I say NO.
