We spent the weekend at the lake with a couple. While boating with them, I noticed the carpeting in the boat. It was the standard short nap, durable, all weather carpeting in most boats. What caught my eye was, it was installed with a series of snaps spaced around the perimeter. He said he could just unsnap the carpet and take it out and clean it.

So...... why couldn't I do the same? Find a nice carpet, trim it to the interior floor size, hem the edges, install the snaps around the edge and then screw the "receivers" into the floor. It sounds like an excellent way to be able to enjoy the carpet with an installation that allows a through cleaning, by removing it.

Your thoughts?

No reason it wouldn't work but sounds like it would be a lot harder than just using a vacum or shampooing once in a while. Boats don't usually have a lot of furniture to move around to get the carpet out.

I just look for specials at Target and Wal-Mart. I usually get a complete set for less than $30.00. I get a rug that I use in front of the door, a bigger rug for the kitchen and a long runner for in between the sofa and dinette. They don't last all season usually and they have a rubber back in case of spills or the occasional los Nino's wearing the wet shoe in the trailer.

Carpeting is a dirt and water magnet. Predominant smell in many campers with added carpeting is mildew from the carpet rotting.

A couple small throw rugs (runners work well) ease the cold under foot. Can be shaken outdoors and put into the washing machine at home.

I just have runners and a couple of throw rugs in my trailer. They catch the dirt. I take them out, shake them, sweep the trailer, and we're done!

We do the throw rugs too, but I carry a 2' X 2' piece of aluminum bar grate to put on the ground right at the step so you can knock a lot of the dirt off before you get to the trailer. I don't have a picture of mine, but I got it from McMaster and here is their catalog cut:

The last reply mentioned a metal scraper mat outside of the trailer. Instead try an "Astroturf" doormat - it has thousands of stiff, grasslike blades that make it an excellent scraper mat. Probably much cheaper and lighter than the metal mat - and can be easily lifted and shaken out.
We've had the same one for years in our trailers and it works great.

Here's my thoughts. I would rather sweep a floor than use a vacuum......and what about all those spills.....much easier to clean a floor than a carpet.

We use the runners and a small matching rug at the front door and in the bathroom. Shake them out regularly (especially the hair from Sam, world's best yellow camping lab) and then every few trips they go in the washer. Outdoors is the mat from Camping World with a small rug at the bottom of the steps. Also have the carpet step covers from Camping World that catch a ton of dirt. They either get swept with a broom or a good wash-off with the hose. Works best for us.
