I would have thought a phone that does more that you ever could have thought it could do would qualify. Heck, my Razr could go on the Internet, but it never changed my life the way the iPhone has.
We have yet to see what a truly "smart" phone can do - to think the Droid is the answer or that the iPhone is not, is a mistake.
Amen.
The iPhone is my 3rd smartphone. The Samsung i700 Pocket PC was my first and a Palm Treo was the 2nd.
The Samsung looked (and acted) like it was made in a 1940s Soviet arms factory in the Gulag while the Treo was eminently practical.
However, neither is in the same ballpark -- make that solar system -- as an iPhone. To me, the main difference is usability, not "multi tasking", open systems, etc. The iPhone is incredibly easy to use. All hail Steve Jobs!
Oh, yeah, I'd just love it if anyone could create apps w/o using Apple as a middle man. NOT! I don't want some socially-challenged 13-year-old creating malware apps to impress his friends!
ALL smart phones OS's ,BB, winMo symbian, and now Android do multi-tasking
the iphone does not,
Okay

my dare, voyager, Env and other phones, Do the same amount of multi-tasking that the iphone does....
So first you say it doesn't do multi tasking, then you say it does? Sounds like you just don't like iphones and that clouds your opinion. Btw, you can listen to music, talk on the phone, email at the same time. that sounds like multitasking to me. So, since you were about as clear as mud on what a "true" smart phone is, I would have to assume it comes down to just multi tasking or more multitasking then the iphone does. But, really how much multitasking do you want to do on a tiny little screen.
Quote: ability to run multiple tasks running at the same time is one of the defining points of a smart phone, the ability to purchase programs from anywhere, or to program them yourself, with out jail breaking is another ( less decisive ) factor
not to many people would be happy IF the only place to buy a program for a Mac was from APPLE and NO place else, quality hardware or not, that hearkens back to Mainframes and renting the computer and software from the MFG. not something for the Personal individual market place
Now we're getting to the root of you bias and silly phone classification. You just don't like apple. Where you buy apps is not how you classify what the phone is. itunes is the market place you are buying the apps from many different developers. Apple is, as it has for a long time attempting to make the end user experience as good as possible. This way they limit the damage all the rogue and harmful apps out there. Surely if you downloaded some program from god knows where it it destroys your phone, who are you going to call and complain to?
You think Verizon is much better? Why do I have to pay Verizon to rent ring tones? Why won't the let me load my own ring tones with using some work around? Why won't the let me access the tower that is two blocks from my house without upgrading my phone?

THen you do EXACTLY what you say you don't like.
The iPhone is without a doubt a Smart phone that has everyone chasing it. All the other smart phone makers are losing market share to it and yet you label is at a glorified feature phone... Those in glass houses..
You were the one who raved about the LG Dare, I have it and can tell you it's junk. It really does only one thing good and that is figure out the tip I should leave.
you are the one in that jumped in panned the Droid after a few minutes of 'checking it out in the store'
I did not jump in and start pounding on the iPhone, in fact I have state quite clearly, there is and will not be any such device as the iPhone killer.
the iPhone as been talked up on these forums before, there are NO posts of ME jumping in and saying i went to the ATT store and the iphone is ****
I have nothing at all against apple or the iPhone, just the media and fanboys that cannot admit it has short comings.. and those same people constanly put down every new phone since the iphone came to the market
I said the apple created a paradigm with the iphone. but that does not make it flawless or bullet proof or the Holy grail for others to reach for or the only thing able to make people happy
and if you want MY idea of multi-tasking it is NOT limited to music while I surf or talk, its having as many things running as i might want whether thats (4) or (10) or enough to slow the device to crawl ( I don't, i know better ) but NO set limit number or task & types decided by the mfg. ( oh you can do 3 things, as long as its these 3 things )
screen size is NOT the deciding factor, even on a PC I don't keep all tasks in the open where I can see them.

I think the only person who intimated that anyone bought an iPhone for status was the moderator who, even thought he refers to it as the Jesus phone, does not have an attitude about it. Everyone else who has one on this forum appears to have purchased it for its usefulness.

Life doesn't come with a safety fence around it... enjoy it anyway.
but don't pound on every other phone, and hold up one likes its the holy grail, when it has holes it, and features missing that even 'dumb' phones have had for years, the first iphone could not even do sms ( text msg ). apple said you don't need it, use email
i'm not a texting person, neither are many others, but in this 'day' that was a major flaw, to omit something like that from a $600 device
yes, its been fixed, its just one example of the flaws.

no mms not sms they have always sms'ed. so your facts are skewed for sure. have you compared the 2? i have a htc mytouch droid in one hand and 1st gen 2g iphone in the other. the iphone is easier to use. they will both do all the tasks asked but iphone is just simpler. my dw is having alot of trouble figuring the droid.
You continually bash the iPhone, I suspect you have some tie to Verizon and that would explain your bias. After all who but you go through so many "smart phones", which all these others are, but the iphone is not even though it does all that they do, oh except the "limited" multi tasking, which you claimed was no multitasking.
I did not spend "minutes" checking out the Droid. I spent a considerable amount of time checking out reviews and in the store. I need something better then this POJ LG Dare that you loved so much.
Now looks at the difference, I said it has bad reviews from users.. That's a fact... The camera is not good, That's a fact and widely complained about... It has software problems..... That's a fact..... It's large...... That's a fact...... It's heavy...... that's a fact.... It's keyboard is not good....... that's a fact.. The droid doesn't do multitouch, don't all smart phones do that?
You're spin on the iphone.... Jesus phone, not a smart phone, owned by fan boys. holy grail.. It doesn't do multitasking to your liking, so it doesn't do multitasking. You claimed people say it's without flaw, yet I don't see that anywhere in these posts
If you spend a few minutes actually looking you would see that the "fan boys" are the ones who complain the most about the iPhone. They want certain features to be included by apple and it's the only way they will do it. It's hard to see when you're blinded by your bias.
What you feel to realize and apparently don't like it, is that Apple very quickly changed and became the gold standard for smart phones. WHen you gobble up that much market share so quickly then OBVIOUSLY your'e doing something right. Now there are so many look a likes out there in form and function.
SO, as far as I can see YOUR definition of a smart phone is multitasking, but any phone with more multitasking then the iphone. Your bias is clear.....
Now you'll call me a fan boy, but since Verizon doesn't have the iPhone I need something that is decent and has some of the features of the iPhone. I was hoping the Droid was it, but sadly it's not and falls way short.
