Ok , we tried Class A travel and falied ...my fault ' i'm too nervous driving in it .
So....we have bought a lite weight travel trailer .
we have a 2005 dodge ram , quad , full size truck and i see locally a reece weight distribution hitch for sale which is 1,000lb tongue and 12,000lb weight .Our trailer is 670 lbs/6100 lbs so i know the hitch is strong enough .
now my dumb question
Do i have to have a certain weight distribution hitch or can i buy this Reece one i've seen ?
Thanks in advance .You guys have helped us a lot

If you want sway control with your weight distribution, then you would probably want to look at an Equalizer or Reese "Dual Cam". Otherwise the Reese you are looking at will probably do the job.

This one does seem a little to heavy for your application. The weight distribution bars are rated to a certain strength, and they are spring bars, so getting ones that are two stiff could make adjustments a little more difficult.

But it is doable. Just don't overtighten them.

Good Luck,

Fred.

How did you get the weights your quoting, did you actually weigh your FULLY LOADED trailer? If so, you need more weight on the tongue. A good target is 13% of the FULLY LOADED weight.

So IF it really weighs 6100#, you want 793# on the tongue. A 1000# unit should be fine IF IF IF you add sway control.

I just got into the travel trailer world myself. My truck is a Dodge 1500 and my trailer is in the same general weight range as yours. After looking at the various hitches available, I purchased the Reese SC Pro from etrailer.com. It is rated at 1100/11,000, and I couldn't be happier. It was easy to install following the very clear directions from the manufacturer(need the right size wrenches though) and works perfectly. The trailer rides level and there is absolutely no effect from passing semis on a two lane highway (sway control is included).

As a side benefit, it is less expensive than some of the others and shipping is free (which is a good deal, because this thing is HEAVY).

I second the Pro Series SC. Mine is lighter at 750# hitch, but the whole setup is great. Easy to put on and use. Had a dead weight hitch before with a friction bar. No comparison.

I have the Equalizer brand hitch with built in sway control... and I love it. Very easy to hook up and it does a great job. I like the bars... no chains to fiddle with.

As others above stated, make sure you get sway control no matter what hitch you get.

The reese hitch your looking at is fine. I have a 2006 dodge dakota and pull a 2007 amerilite by gulfstream. I had a terrible sag I put the reese distribution hitch on and now my headlights are back at the rite height. the only problem I have is it makes the creeking sounds when turning.

A snapping sound means the dual cams are working!
