The frame I have has limited internal memory and only takes SD cards, while my camera takes compact flash. I use a card reader, which you can get for around $10. and plug it into my USB port with the SD card plugged into it. Then I can drag and click my edited and resized images right onto the SD card and it is ready to plug into the frame.

Ok, I purchased one from costco which is 10.4", actual 8", holds 5,000 pictures, takes the various cards, does not take usb cable unfortunately, supposedly will do wifi transfer with some sort of adapter. I figure there is little to lose if this one doesn't work out given costcos return policy.

We leave in two days for the anniversary trip at which time I need this thing loaded and ready to go. I've been in the middle of going through our pre-digital days pictures and have taken three lots of them down to costco for digitizing so far. These are not rolls of film, they are the 5 image strips which I have to identify the image(s) off of each strip so they know which to scan. This is more labor intensive for costco than just running a full roll through the machine, but to their credit they have turned around the 1st and 2nd batch within 24 hours. Talked with them this morning about the 3rd batch and I am behind three other jobs and they cannot guarantee they will be done today, so I'll go with what I have and add others later.

This is a much bigger job then I had anticipated, I had know idea we had this many photos/negatives stored up over all these years.

Anyway, while working this process I have another question. My memory is not so good anymore and in a number of cases there are places we have been (camping and otherwise) that I cannot identify. I was real good about taking lots of pictures of the areas we visited at the detail level, but rarely took an overall picture (like of the campground sign) that would identify the location oh so many years later. There are lots of nature scenery photos that could be anywhere in the state (or U.S.) In most cases I can group the photos together ok as they still in the original package from the original roll of film but once they get on the photo frame all bets are off with regards to telling where in the heck some of these places are.

I've also found that the pictures do not always stay together in sequence, which makes things a bit difficult as you might have three or four pictures from the same trip yet they are spread out throughout the long series of photos in the frame. What would be really cool is if a notation could be made with each image that provided some detail of location for that particular image.

Anyone else struggle with this issue or are your memories much better than mine?

You can add text to most photos with most photo editing programs. Once you get the time, get all you photos into your computer then bring them up one at a time and put in a short text message right on the bottom of the picture. This would, of course, take a whole lot of time but would probably be worth the effort to get it done while the memory is still mostly there!

Yes that is true, unfortunately. Should be amusing when I start forgetting who the people are...

"Who is that women?"

wife: "That's my mother!"....

Now that looks like an excellent deal, particularly with the USB file transfer. I'm going to order one to put on my desk in the office.

Thanks

The Kodak frame I got for my B-day 3 years ago worked great. untill it stopped working a year and a half later! I used a memory stick, but it stuck out the side. the better option is the memory card. I would imagine by now they should have some type of built in memory of more than 128mb?

Mine failed (power supply related) 2 days after I bought it for my mother.

I returned it, did not replace it.

Was a little turned off after spending 30 hours getting about 1700 pic's in order.

I created a slide show on a DVD and gave it to her!

ps.......

The funeral parlor charges a few hundred to create a slide show of a few dozen pic's. I will buy one before they get a shot at me! Gees, what a ripoff.

Well I'm out of time and done loading this costco frame for now. It has 1 GB of internal memory which supposedly holds 5000 images. I've loaded most every negative that had a corresponding print for reference that I could easily get my hands on for now. There are many boxes of film negatives, slides, prints etc from three generations that need digitized eventually.

I need to purchase some sort of viewer for the negatives, especially for those without corresponding prints since I cannot tell for sure what is on the negatives. I have been using a loupe and the white of the google screen to verify which images on the negatives were the ones I was wanting, but it is a mickey mouse method at best.

The costco frame seems to be working well now and has very good picture quality, but the remote is very cheap with the buttons not responding or needing multiple pushes before they do. Once the frame is loaded and set-up this not that big of deal, but during the loading process the remote is used quite a bit and is very frustrating when it doesn't work. In addition you really need to make sure the images are oriented correctly before you load the frame as changing an image from horizontal to vertical orientation is more hassle to do once it is on the frame. I'll put the frame back in its original box and wrap it up to give to my wife tomorrow.

Funny how reviewing all these old pictures really brings back the memories. Interesting that our lives are defined not only by the people, events, and places, but also by the vehicles and pets owned over a lifetime. We have been very blessed to have shared life with several dogs over the years that loved to go camping with us.

Some of the best times we have had as a family were with that faded old chevy van with the huge dent in the rear door. We camped everywhere with that thing, slept either in the back of the van or in a tent. No fancy RV, no gps, no cellphone, no air conditioning, no internet hookup. Just some sleeping bags, a colmen stove, a cooler, some food, our bicycles, our dog, and a desire to see what was around the next bend in the road.
