Bought my second set (2) 6V Interstate 2200 batteries in March 2005. They just now are showing real signs of failure (dull lights, etc.,)

I'm satisfied with their service....the motorhome, (2001) came with these, they wore out and I replaced them, as mentioned in March 2005...so no complaints.

I'm wondering...and I've researched this forum just abit...but the answer...well I couldn't find it.

My 12 V. (chassis) battery is a "series 27 deep cycle". I'm wondering: would I...should I...can I....replace the 2 6V batteries with another Series 27 deep cycle...without messing anything up?
Space is not a problem (all 3 batteries are in the same tray)...and we "boondock" almost never. Like 1 nite at a Wal Mart and , maybe 2 or 3 times at a racetrack, 1 nite at the Hershey RV show...but then we used our genny a bit. And that's since 2001! ((The 2 6Vs won't start the genny now. that's the reason for this querey))

The reason for 2 six volt batteries instead of one 12 volt is the amps. If you never "dry camp" or never go more than a couple of weeks between trips than a good "deep cycle 12 volt" battery would do. Other than that, IMHO I would stick to the 2 six volt batteries!

This option will depend or the converter output for charging too. I would go for 2 12volt group 27 batts if the convertor output is 45 amps or greater. 30 amps or lower and a single 12 volt would be okay.

You say that your chassis battery is a deep cycle. It shouldn't be. It may in fact work, but it isn't the correct application. You might consider using it for the house, and replace the chassis battery with one rated for cold cranking.

Why would you want to cut your amp hour rating by roughly 1/2??

2 six volt batteries will trump a 12V battery any day of the week.

Just put in the 27. If it does not have enough umph you can add a second 27. Then when they both go bad you can decide 6v vs 12v again.

I replaced three 12V house batteries with just one group 27 deep cycle battery.

I have no need for the extra capacity as we never "boondock" there is just no reason to have anything more than what will start the generator and run the interior lights for maybe an hour at most.

Hi,

Yes you can use a single 27 battery. It will discharge faster on the rare times that you do boondock, but you seem prepared to run the generator a hour per day to recharge, so that will work fine.

The battery will actually charge faster than the pair of 6 volts, but charge at a slower amp hour per hour rate (if that makes sense). In other words because you will only have 100 amp hours, it will go from 50% to 85% in only about an hour of recharging, at a 30 amp hour charge rate. But the pair of 6 volt batteries at 50% full will require 70 amp hours to bring it up to full, and might charge at 40 amp for 2 hours to get to that level.

But you will get double the capacity from the pair of golf cart batteries.

Your motorhome will be 60 pounds lighter with only the single battery, and you will save power while on standby.

I would change to a smaller battery bank if I was not dry camping, but I dry camp a lot, so have 4 batteries. My Trojan T-105 original set lasted 9 years, and the new set is now 4 and works great!

get one new 12 volter. if needed add a second one. in your situation there is no reason to drink the 6 volt KoolAid.

if 2005 INterestates are showing signs of failure (my 2005 batteries are still going strong) I would recommend you post the make and model of your converter

I have a PDI-9180 WIth optional wizard

As for replacing 2 sixes with one 12..

You are replacing one 2-piece 12 volt battery another 12 volt (one piece) battery

The only changes will be battery capacity (The sixes are likely 220 amp hour, the single 12 will likley be smaller but... May not be (8d for example is about the same size)

And battery life.... MOST, but not all 12 volt batteries, are not designed for RV type use wher as the six volts are (Again but not all)
