Okay , it looks like a no brainer to take 37 down , but I see a 188 heading east to Aransas. Is this a good two way road OR should I just stick on 37 to181 north to 35 ene ????
If, I were already in SAT, then I'd get on I-37 down.
Don't think you have anything to gain by taking US181 other than having to put up with some small town traffic.

Now enjoying mother earth at ground level and one mile per minute.
We spent 40 years in Texas and found very few bad back roads. Small towns are a horse of a different color, just watch for low bridges and Barney Fifes!
Take 188. Some nice small towns, and a very pleasant drive. We drive it round trip once a week to visit the VA in San Antonio. And, you won't save much time on I-37.
If you like the quick route, take I-37 South. Exit # 31 is for Route 188. It takes you through Sinton, TX and on to Rockport. 188 has a couple of "S" curves, so watch the speed limit signs.
181 breaks off of I-37 just outside of San Antonio going South. You will go through a number of small towns (Floresville, Poth, Kennedy, Karnes City, etc.) until it gets to Sinton, where you'll catch 188 and proceed as above.
I have traveled them both many times going to Rockport, and it really is a toss-up. Small towns are stop-n-go and lower speed, while I-37 is a quick, typical interstate route.
My parents' have a house in Rockport, so we haven't pulled the 5er there, but have taken it along to Port Aransas a number of times. Shouldn't have to worry about bridges on either route. The lowest bridge is on I-37 just south of downtown San Antonio. They've raised the bridge to 13'10" versus the 13'6" it used to be.

So, where do you stay in Rockport?

A good trip with lots to see is: take I10 to Seguin, pick up 90A to Gonzales where the first battle in the Texas revolution was fought, then on to Shiner and a visit to the brewery, then 96 south to Yoakum, pick up 77A south thru Cuero to Goliad and spend the night at Goliad State Park and visit the mission, persideo la bahia, Fannin's monument, and downtown Goliad and learn the real story of Texas independance. Then take 77A south to Refugio, right at the first light on 77 thru town then left on 774(look for the sign that says To Bayside), right on 2678 at light thru Bayside and across the shallows of Copano Bay and turn left on 188 to Rockport. Be sure to eat at the Big Fisherman while in Rockport( you will pass it on the left on 188 just before you turn left on business 35 entering town).
Happy travels
Larry
