I did the following using Delorme mapping on a similar post. As stated in an earlier post, weather may play a role in taking 58 or 5 as both can have snow. The chance of snow is almost not an issue for the routes that use 134 to 101 or 126 to 101. Traffic is an issue moreso on the 134 to 101 in the LA area. Timing will lessen that problem on the 126 to 101 when going through Santa Barbara.

The 210/5/46 route: 208 miles in 4 hours 12 minutes.
The 210/134/101: 223 miles in 4 hours 34 minites.
The 210/118/101: 237 miles in 4 hours 56 minutes.
The 210/5/126: 242 miles in 4 hours 53 minutes.

The distances will remain the same, the variable is the time due to traffic. The 210/118/101 takes longer to go a shorter distance because the some of the 118 to 101 on the more direct route is a 4 lane surface street with stop lights. I did not check taking the freeway 118 to the 101 as that entailed a several mile back-track to the 101.

The above route would avoid ALL socal traffic.
Use I10w to Blythe then SR95n to Needles & I40w. This route
according to Streets & Trips adds just under 50 mi. versus
going thru socal.(740mi. vs. 695mi.) Going up I17 thru
Flagstaff adds 160 mi.

BTW I think 89burban meant to indicate using the 101n from
Paso Robles, not the 1

Time of day won't matter as very little of this route has
any significant traffic.

Why waste 50 miles (40 min of time)? I-10/CA-57/I-210/I-5 is the shortest and fastest way.

I don't see driving as a waste of time. Unless i'm in a hurry.(lol)

I don't remember him asking for the quickest route. 40mins on a 12 hour drive is really nothing to worry about in my book. I would rather it be nice scenic route.

Not the fastest route in the afternoon thru Arcadia/Pasadena and the 5
thru Valencia. Early AM 210 west is heavy traffic also thru above
cities

50 miles of a 700+ mi trip is almost nothing especially when you
can avoid all traffic, potential accidents, commuters going home
at 80+mph in the slow lanes. When I tow my 13000lb+ RV I like a lot of traffic room so I can maintain my speed and stopping distance. If you drove both routes with a big trailer I believe you would "waste" the 50 extra miles for peace of mind and less driving stress.
And your travel time would probably be the same. Without a towed vehicle then yes it may be faster but again time of day/traffic flow is the determining factor. He is going from Phoenix to Watsonville,
he does not need to travel thru socal to get there. YMMV

Well he is headed to a funeral in Watsonville so I suspect he's not on a site seeing tour. If it were me I would want the fastest way and 40 min to me would be a big deal.
