Anyone do Snowshoe in winter? If so, do they allow RV parking up top? Looks like a 6% grade for 6 miles to the summit. We've been many times via car, just can't remember seeing any campers up there. Their space up top is limited. Camping at the bottom is not an option. (no toad).

TIA!

They have a website with a telephone number, why not call and ask about the RV parking?

I haven't done it yet but plan on going there this year and skiing.
I researched it last year and know there is a PV Park that is open in the winter. Not at the top though it's a few mi away.

I have seen rigs there on numerous occasions in the parking lots. I haven't taken our motorhome up there because we stay in a private residence when we ski there. I might suggest an alternative it you haven't already tried it. Canaan Valley State Park (north of Snowshoe and an easier drive to reach than Snowshoe in a motorhome) has a campground open during the winter with electric hookups and water and a dump station are also available. There is a bus that makes frequent trips through the campground to pick up skiers and return them. No toad is necessary. Also, adjoining Timberline has transportation to their slopes also.

The Canaan slope is only 1/2 mile from the campground, so you can ski in the morning, take the bus back to your motorhome for lunch if you wish, and return for an afternoon session. Canaan is much less crowded than Snowshoe.

We have stayed there 7 to 14 days during ski season. Wish I were going soon, but just had knee surgery today, so skiing will have to wait for a while!

Tarheel: Excellent information. Thanks! Is the Canaan camping the state park camping or a private campground nearby? Timberline is on the list of places to try. Wife and 6yr old really likes the village at the top of Snowshoe along with the restaurants and the water park. I think I'll enjoy the terrain at Timberline. Good luck on your knee.

The campground at Canaan is in the state park and the shuttle is a state park shuttle. It makes continuous rounds from the lodge through the campground to the ski slopes and tube park. It does not however compare to Snowshoe with all the restaurants, shops, etc., but as far as convenience of sking from your motorhome, it can't be beat. I'm sure your 6 yr. old would enjoy the tube park. If you want additional information, just let me know. I've been sking in numerous areas with our motorhome, both east and west, and Canaan with the two ski areas is one of our favorites.

We stayed in Canaan mid-October to observe the autumn colors... but we were snowed on pretty heavily so our autumn was pure white!!! The campground is pretty nice but I was told that they turn off the fresh water after Thanksgiving. One of the good deals with this campground is that for $7 a day you can utilize the resort's indoor pool, jacuzzi & saunas.

Also, if you get tired of skiing, there are numerous other activities in the area. I'd recommend going to see Black Water Falls when the falls are frozen. I haven't seen it in about 30 years, but plan on visiting again this winter.

Word of caution on driving to/from Canaan Valley is to map our your trip beforehand. I almost exclusively use our Garmin GPS and it attempted to route me on Public Road 19 over Dolly Sods... a very small back road. Late at night, raining and trying to turn around, disconnect the toad and backing into an intersection in the middle of the pitch-black mountains ain't fun.

You're correct about the water being turned off during the winter, but they allow refilling your water tanks at the bathhouse, which is heated and there is a faucet with threads for hooking up your hose. Last year, we had a deep snow and when I got ready to dump during my stay, the road crew had to locate the dump station for me. They are very obliging and have even plowed a site for me that hadn't been used since the first snow fall. They also plow and cinder the campground road and it's loops.

Deer and other wild game will come around your campsites frequently and you can sit in your motorhome at night and see the lights from both Canaan and Timberline ski slopes. Beautiful place to visit during the winter.

I should have added that the $7 per day use of the pool and such is $7 for everybody in your campsite, not for each person.

The deer are pretty aggressive and friendly. They do approach you and want to be fed. There is a $300 fine for feeding wildlife, but we saw plenty of people that were feeding the deer (or perhaps just touching their tongues???)

Beautiful place and we'll definitely go back this winter.
