Blue hair refers to the slight tint a woman with grey hair has after trying to get the yellow out of grey hair. It's a blueing rince to make the hair look whiter. Of course this was in the olden days when technology in hair color was young.
I don' think youger people refer to blue hairs as a derogatory term, Just a general reference to a generation.
The above poster had a good point. What do you refer to the younger crowd as?

My hair is Mighty White and I guess I have been called a lot of things over the Years so I have learned to not take offense at any of them!
There are still guys I've known for Years Who call Me Young Feller and Youthful Clerks in Stores that address Me as Sir to My face! I'm pretty sure that there are Other More Colorful Words used behind My Back! So What I was pretty disrespectful when I was Growing Up!
One thing I do Not like to hear is Profanity in any form. It just lowers My respect for the Person using it!

I'm aware some stare at my hair.
In fact, to be fair,
Some really despair of my hair.
But I don't care,
Cause they're not aware,
Nor are they debonair.
In fact, they're just square.
They see hair down to there,
Say, "Beware" and go off on a tear!
I say, "No fair!"
A head that's bare is really nowhere.
So be like a bear, be fair with your hair!
Show it you care.
Wear it to there.
Or to there.
Or to there, if you dare!
My wife bought some hair at a fair, to use as a spare.
Did I care?
Au contraire!
Spare hair is fair!
In fact, hair can be rare.
Fred Astaire got no hair,
Nor does a chair,
Nor nor a chocolate eclair,
And where is the hair on a pear?
Nowhere, mon frere!
So now that I've shared this affair of the hair,
I'm going to repair to my lair and use Nair, do you care?

I don't care what color my hair is as long as I still have it on my head.

This is not unlike the term "snowbird". It can be used in a derogatory way or simply as a descriptive term depending on the situation.

When I talk with my mother (whom nearly died last year) I call her all sorts of names.. blue hair... aged one... and my favorite "wrinkly" .
She knows its all in good fun.
I also work with an older guy at work... i tease him about his age also...
It really is all about the intent.
If it is said to insult someone, the word is not the issue. the intent is.
I think it really depends on how YOU intend it to be perceived.
If you say it to hurt someone, then it is wrong.

Only YOU can allow yourself to feel insulted. Why give that kind of power to someone else?

Exactly. Using the term 'bluehair' isn't what this is about, it's how a phrase, a word....is used.
A word in itself is harmless, but it's how a word is used...what's the intent.
If you say it to hurt someone, then it is wrong.
