Trying to help some young Aussie travelers on another forum who are going to be vacationing on the west coast area of the USA over Christmas, they are asking the question as to where to spend Christmas while here, my suggested criteria would include a place with lots of restaurants, inexpensive motels,a good beach and a lively club scene.
As i'm not that familiar with the west coast where would a place like that be? or where would you spend Christmas if you were in their place?

The West coast is a big place and people could probably give you some better examples if we had more info. Much of the items you list can be found anyplace on the west coast other than inexpensive hotels. Or I should say inexpensive hotels that you may actually want to stay in.
Do they have transporation? If not, there are a couple of really decent cheaper hotels in Pleasanton, Ca near the BART station. I forget the name of it, but there is one right across from the BART station that is probably less that $100 a night. From there it's about a 50 minute train ride to downtown San Francisco as well as many other Bay Area destinations.
