May want to consider getting a larger travel trailer or a new truck. Your fiver selection is going to be pretty limited and you may even exceed your rear axle weight rating with a small one. You can pretty much get whatever TT you want though.

The new 1/2 tons will do a great job, but, I do not like to worry about every pound so that is why I have a 3/4 ton. You can change the tires and that will help there but what are you going to do about the brakes?

Putting that much weight in the bed (even in front of the rear axle) is going to compress the springs a lot. Besides the axle ratings and GVWR, plan and budget for some kind of help, air bags or helper springs or Timbrens.

With the max to package the brakes are rated to bumper tow 11,300 lbs and I checked the rear axle and it is rated to 4050 lbs. We were looking for a small fifth wheel, as we will soon be without kids. We like to travel around to the national and state parks and really don’t want to or need anything longer that 25’ bumper pull or 27’ fiver. Anything much longer is difficult to find sites and even pull through some areas. We also don’t intend to be full timers either. If things change, we can always upgrade. The 21’ TT we have with the rear bed slide is OK, but we find that storage is limited so we have to keep clothing in travel bags under the dinette and food in odd places. I don’t know why we didn’t realize the storage limitations before we bought it. We are not planning in carrying any more stuff, just want a place to put it and not have to sit down to let someone pass you when changing ends of the camper. We were spoiled when we had out Minni Winni with the side slide.

Best I could find on the brakes...
F150 Front 13.7" Rear 13.7"
F250/350 Front 13.66" rear 13.39"

The superduty says they are a vented disk, F150 does not say.

You could tow one of these 5th wheels with a 4 cylinder Toyota or Nissan.

Ok, I think I know the answer to this question, but I just wanted to confirm. I found a nice 26' fiver with a dry pin weight of 1342 lbs. Pretty much at the limit of my payload with a hitch included. The total GVWR of the RV is 8836 lbs and the dry weight is 6786 lbs. I have yet to see any fivers advertised with the loaded pin weight. Should I be looking at the dry hitch weight or the loaded pin weight, which is not available anywhere I have looked?

Here's how I'd look at it: Your dry pin (1342#) is about 20% or your dry weight. Typically, by the time you're loaded with propane, batteries, living essentials, and food, you've added 1000#.

So, 20% of 6786 + 1000 is 1557#. If you're good with that for a pin weight plus some buffer, I say go for it!

Good Luck!

Jayco is now making a half ton fifth wheel. It's the Eagle Super Lite HT line. It might be worth a look.
