Forty years ago I drove Hwy 50 from Sacramento to Wichita. We're thinking about traveling the same route this year going West. Can anyone tell me the condition of 50 today?

We ran the whole stretch from the Kansas border over to Montrose last summer. Great road. No problem at all. The first leg was west over to Poncha Springs and on the way home from P. Springs over to Montrose.

Not sure about the condition of the Hwy, but don't forget, when you get off the main Interstate, low clearances can be an issue in small towns. They don't all seem to follow the 13'6" national limit for overpasses. Some people have GPS units that will route around these hazards, I didn't. One day we decided to get off the freeway and just slow-go it for sight seeing..TT in tow. My GPS alerted me to a low clearance 5000 feet ahead (10'3"). Gave us time to re-route. Check out this link for peace of mind. I am a total believer. Good luck....a nostalgic drive.....can't be anything better.

Dodge City to Grand Junction CO, 3 weeks ago: road in good condition, few construction spots. Monarch Pass an easy but long pull and descent.

We have driven US-50 through Kansas and several other states. Generally a good road with lots of interesting places to stop and see. Here is a US-50 website we have found useful.

There's an excellent article about "US Route 50" on Wikipedia. Keep in mind that 50 goes through Cincinnati, St. Louis and Kansas City. Where I'm from in Cincinnati, it goes right thru downtown on Columbia Parkway from the east. No trucks allowed. It was built a long time ago, when lanes were only wide enough for Model A's. Its a challenge in a car. I don't know the situation in St. Louis or Kansas City. If you intend to pick 50 up west of KC, you shouldn't have a problem.

About 3 weeks ago we drove US 50 from Pueblo to Gunnison and back. Great road, no problems and wonderful scenery. Another poster mentioned Monarch Pass, we had no problem getting either up or down it. There are also lots of RV parks along the road and plenty of gas stations for whatever type of fuel you want (at least between these two points).

Happy Travels!

I believe major US Hwys in small towns are have no clearance issues as semis go thru them. At least that is how it is in my area, US-50,Us-31 and others. We just took a trip up the west side of Mi., no major roads most of the way, thru a lot of small towns and no low clearances. Came home on US-23 for a ways before switching to US-127.

Have driven from the west end in California to Kansas in the last few years, NO problems for an RV. Just drove the Nevada & Utah section this summer, NO problems except the wind. There are some excellent public campgrounds.
