Spent a great weekend camping with some friends in Port Renfrew this past weekend. so relaxing right on the beach at the ocean. Packed up and started to head back home only to find transmission issue. Only have first and reverse. Had to get towed home to Victoria on a flat deck. $900 later back at home safe and sound, but have a mighty expensive fiberglass and steel rock in the drive way until I get it fixed.

Ouch!!!!

Our 94 gasser, f250's, E4OD gave up the ghost 2 years ago after 120,000 miles.
I was lucky, the Torque Converter was slipping a bit under heavy pull. I limped her home..600+ mi....Hard shifting...Had a reputable Tranny shop rebuild it...They put all the HD shift parts, factory tech bulletins and Diesel TC in..When the camper is on and I am towing our Baja I'm moving over 6500lbs (camper and Baja).
$4,000 ouchers.... I told them that the cost of the repair was greater than the price I paid for the truck 4 back in 2006....It had 64,000 mi on it...It was like it had just been on the showroom floor...Beautiful...So the repair was ok cost wise for us.

Good luck with yours.

Been there and done that. Tow bill to transmission shop and transmission/torque converter rebuild approximately $4000. Spent two nights in TC (off truck) behind transmission shop, with wife and two grand kids. We did have my Samurai towed with our bikes on the back. Went to local park and rode bicycles. After transmission repair, continued on to coast, and overall enjoyed our trip.

WestCoast Transmission serviced our 7.3L F-250 annually when we lived on the Island. They kept repeating that giving these trannies good cool down time is important, especially after backing uphill which we had to do every time we returned home to Shawnigan Lake.

Drives me crazy, but DH will idle the truck for about 10 minutes after some heavy duty work. No issues thus far ... touch wood.

Did you eat at the "Coastal Cafe" (at least I think that was the name....they had an amazing seafood pizza.) Good luck with the tranny. I've been stopped on a trip by a blown engine...but never from a tranny. Of course, I changed the tranny after rebuilding that motor since I figured it would be next.

That would be a long windy and expensive tow trip back to the city.

Not only backing but doing any heavy climbing in any gear that the Torque converter does not lock will rapidly raise the temperature of the tranny fluid....I watch my temp very close under those conditions.

Lot's to be said for a manual tranny!!! Had that on our previous truck..

So I called around to a couple of places and it looks like my transmission has had it. I'll be needing a complete rebuild costing around $3300 tax in. So 3300 for the transmission plus the $900 for the tow and that comes to a whopping $4200 weekend. Woohoo.....NOT.
