You could also try Emerald Desert in Palm Desert:

BTW, there are not many places in this whole area where one is *not* near a golf course! ;-)

RE: Is VanDamme State Park near Mendocino open?

According to this "camping season schedule" information from the CA state parks posted on October 30, Van Damme is closed until the end of March 2010. This chart seems to have to most current information on which CA state parks are open when.

RE: Renew Insurance Yes or No?

At what value to folks usually drop insurance coverage on their rigs?
---
What *kind* of insurance are you talking about? If you use the rig at all, don't even think about dropping liability/uninsured motorist coverages! And, $268.00 a year!? That's just a little over $22.00 a month; you can't get two medium pizzas for that amount.
You might want to review your current total coverage package with your insurer and see if any adjustments can be made -- changes that don't affect your liability coverages, of course.

RE: Overnight parking off I-10/Indio area?

Another vote for the Morongo casino; it's a very convenient, safe, no-hassle overnight stop. I don't gamble, but I do have breakfast in the cafe as a small gesture of "thanks" for the stopping place.

RE: California Emmisions-SMOG

First, know what type of "smog check" your vehicle requires; the registration papers will specify this, and this website will provide more information:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/smog.htm
I live in the Bay Area of CA and have a 2003 class C on the Ford E450 chassis; it just had its first smog check earlier this month. The total cost for the test and paperwork was $95.00; this is the typical cost for this vehicle. The cost includes a $25.00 charge to *remove the doghouse* to check the EGR valve; this valve is inaccessible unless the doghouse is removed. No *reputable* shop will do a smog check on any vehicle that requires removing the doghouse unless they actually do that and manually check the valve. There's no shortage of rip-off smog outfits that scam customers, cut corners and fake tests; guess who takes the heat for that kind of stuff?
I checked around locally for "certified" shops with *reasonable access for a motorhome*; I went to each shop, and didn't rely on getting correct access/space information over the phone or from the web.
Smog checks for large vehicles with doghouses are expensive, but it's just one of the costs of ownership. The cost for the smog check for *your* vehicle may be different from mine -- different areas of CA, different year and vehicle, whatever -- but be prepared for the fact that the test on a motorhome *will* cost a lot more than a test on a car.

RE: Yellowstone specifics

The most comprehensive and current information on the national parks is found on each park's website; in the case of Yellowstone, it's
http://www.nps.gov/yell/index.htm
Start with the "Plan Your Visit" link at page left.

RE: Dump Stations

"Any good plumber can install one in most cases. Myself being a plumber installed 2 cleanouts; one on the right and left side of my side yard to work with any RV. I also installed hose bibs next to them for convenience."
---
Just a heads up for anyone wanting to do this: check your local ordinances (and CCRs, if you live in a neighborhood with these) for the legality of installing a sewer cleanout. I tried to have a cleanout put in, but couldn't find a plumber who was willing to risk "bootlegging" it and getting caught running afoul of the local ordinances. And, if putting in a "driveway" cleanout *is* prohibited in your neighborhood, and you put one in anyway, you can bet that some "peek through the window blinds and mind everybody else's business" neighbor will blow the whistle! :R

RE: Zion Tunnel Length Restrictions Strictly Enforced

Read about the Zion tunnel here:
http://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/the-zion-mount-carmel-tunnel.htm
"Escort" is a misleading term; there's no "escort" as such. Traffic is controlled by traffic rangers from each end of the tunnel, i.e., traffic on one side is lined up and held while traffic from the other end passes through, using the whole width (both lanes) of the roadway and traveling down the middle. The process is repeated for traffic from the other side. Going through the tunnel is $15.00; I've always paid the fee (the *only* "entrance" fee, since I have an "old people's pass") upon entering the park.

RE: Motorhome Makers: Heads Up!

"Tatest" wrote: "To demand that all Bs and Cs be made to your preference is unreasonable. You are not the only customer, your preferences are not the only preference."

Agreed! I laughed out loud when I read the OP's presumptuous "demands" for class B and C (*very* different animals!)floor plan designs.
There are lots of manufacturers of variously-sized class B, B+, and C rigs, all with ranges of options and floor plans and "amenities". Do the research and get what works for *you*. YMMV!

RE: Propane odor while traveling

A potential propane system leak is nothing to speculate about or fool around with; I suggest that the OP cut to the chase and have a pressure test done on the propane system at a reliable RV service center, and soon! YMMV.

RE: Central California Suggestions?

"Another nice park is San Lorenzo County Park in King City on 101."
---
I posted a response to this comment earlier, but, apparently, the moderator took exception and removed it. I simply pointed out that King City and 101 is a *long way* from I-5, and since the OP asked for information on stopping places on I-5, I didn't think the 101 information would be of much help to him!

RE: Dump Stations

The most comprehensive dump station list *by far* is contained on the www.sanidumps.com site mentioned by "2chiefsRus". I have used this resource many times, and have found very few inaccuracies.
If and when I DO find misinformation, i.e., a now-closed dump site or a price change or whatever, I report it to the site; the site relies on user feedback to help them stay current.

RE: base camp for sequia and kings canyon park

I second Azalea; there are several sites that your rig will fit into. Be aware that it's *cold* at night and in the mornings, and, if it rains in the lower elevations, snow is very possible in Sequoia! Check the forecast and be prepared.

RE: WiFi -- just how dependable @ Parks??

how often does the WiFi actually perform as advertised for you??
---
In RV parks, rarely; the signal is usually weak (or intermittent or non-existent), or you have to be within a *very short* distance of the wifi "point". Wifi in bookstores, coffee shops, visitor centers, and other venues is usually more reliable, but there can be a real problem of *parking* while one either accesses a signal from inside the rig, or when one has to haul the laptop into the coffee shop or whatever. If you want reliable internet connection, use an air card and cell phone or a satellite connection. Unfortunately, the reality of wifi for the RVer has never lived up to the hype. :(
