RE: Towing 5th Wheel

My rig wieghs around 11,000 loaded and we're well under GCWR, but about max on rear axle. My guess is you'll exceed rear axle weight rating once you load up. That being said, you'll be in the same camp as about 2/3 of those using 3/4 tons without any trouble. As far as the big tires, I'm not a big fan for towing. Larger tires will make for taller final gearing. I went from stock 245's to 265's and like the looks, but it's not dramatic enough to effect towing.

RE: ST235/80R16E made in China tires

I had similar experience with Kenda Klevers. Repair to 5er $1500 plus 4 new tires. I only have about an inch of clearance between my tires. No problems. I can only imagine what the NTSB would be doing if auto makers were putting these tires on our cars.

RE: Replacement Engine 454

I bought a reman from Jasper a few years back for my boat. Yes....water will freeze if left in over a Missouri winter. This was a GM 4.3. Mechanic said cost was just about the same as a rebuild and the reman had warranty.

RE: best quality mid level 5th wheel for the money

I'd suggest my brand, but they WENT OUT OF BUSINESS!! Jayco, Nomad, and Cedar Creek seemed nice when we were shopping. Regarding weight, the 5er in picture below weighs around 11K loaded and is 33' long. It has only one slide. Weight the day we picked it up was 9K. Hope this helps.

RE: 5th wheel truck beds..add'l

We've used 4wd a couple times towing camper. However, this is a daily driver at our house so 4wd is a nice option. Loosing 500 lbs. of towing capacity isn't a problem for us. And ride and handling are equal with 2wd. Diesels are also a bit nose heavy so 4wd is nice to compensate for this.

RE: Hello,I have a truck Camper but new to 5th Wheel experience.

We have a Reese Signature Series 18K hitch. There are four hockey puck size wholes that the hitch drops into. Requires no tools to remove hitch and bed is left clean. However, it takes two people to remove hitch. You could rig up some sort of winch overhead also.

RE: michigan up.

We went a few years ago in July. Nice beach at Escanaba. Nice KOA at Newberry. Very nice park at Iron Mountain (can't recall if it was KOA or not). Crossed border at Sault St. Marie and stayed at KOA on Canadian side. We didn't have any advance reservations except for calling same day or day prior.

RE: I-70 from Denver to Grand Junction

Be sure and stop around Glennwood Springs. Very pretty rest areas in the canyon.

RE: Branson Mo. Camping

Stayed at Musicland Campground last year. Right off the strip behind the Titanic. Nice to be able and walk around strip. Also like Comptons, KOA (formerly Chastain's), Compton's, ABC, and Tall Pines. Compton's used to have an indoor pool which was nice this time of year. Friends from church just returned from Lakeside previously mentioned. These are all private campgrounds and full hook ups. No a bad apple in the bunch as far as we're concerned. No experience with state parks.

RE: Fulltime Livable 5vers

Space Craft, New Horizons, Carriage, Travel Supreme, & Newmar (if they're still building 5ers?). I'm sure others will chime in with other full time units.

RE: Which hitch to buy?

Reese 18K Signature Series (slider). Had for 5 years with no issues. Give you a clean bed when removed. No opinion/expereince with any of the others mentioned.

RE: Younger Campers

20 years ago we were the youngest folks at most campgrounds. In our mid 40's I still think we're young. Like you, we chose to RV rather than have a bigger home, second vacation home, etc. What a life changing event. We've travelled all over the country and been fortunate to have 3 kids who have been along for the ride.

RE: How Much for Freight Charges?

I think if you figure $2.00/mile you'll be at the upper end. I'd think it might be a bit less.

RE: Toy Hauler Generators

Maybe a portable is the way to go. We have a Yamaha 3000 with approx. 100 hours on it. It's not as handy as a built in but it's portability is nice. We really like having it for our travels. Let's us always have power for quick overnight stops, lunch breaks and for boondocking.

RE: Reese Hitch-Mistake or Not?

Had ours since 2004. No issues. Like the positive wrap around locking jaw. Dealers generally promote basic hitches. RV sales down. And the premium hitch market is already crowded for the few who select this option.

RE: New guy and My first post is asking about Jayco 26 BH

We looked hard at Jayco and Nomad when we bought our first RV. We ultimately bought the Nomad, but that was a dealer issue not anything against Jayco. Both seemed about as equal as you could reasonably compare. What we did do was get a 30' unit. Both dealers encouraged this. Cost was only $400 more and weight was approx. 300# more. Since we didn't have a slide the extra room was really nice.

RE: 3/4 ton for a daily drive - Stupid?? - True cost to drive??

What you see in the picture has been my daily driver since 2004. I get around 14-15 in town. Oil changes will cost a bit more, but you can about double the interval milage, two batteries vs. one, and tires will cost a bit more. Otherwise it works good. I want a pickup anyway. Roomy cab is nice. Downside would be it rides a bit harsh. Summary: Better than having an extra vehicle to maintain, insure and find a place to park.

RE: Range of Miles Before Filling....

The combo you see got 10.5 travelling east to Washington, DC and New York in July. So your figure is about right. We have a 26 gal. tank. Yes you will want to stop every 2.5 hours or so, but in our case you must also fuel. I wish it were bigger.

RE: What you should know about Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)

"fordsooperdooty" commercial engines will be required to meet new 2010 emmissions. International is using additional EGR technology. Cummins & Detroil are using DEF.

RE: Best fifth wheel hitch for newbie

I have the Reese Signature Series 18K. Seems to be a "better" quality hitch. I wanted a clear bed with no rails. Once removed there are four flush holes that you plug. I'm happy with the hitch, but found that the rails most hitches use probably wouldn't have been a problem after all. You don't need a slider so save your money. Four way tilt good.
