RE: Is VanDamme State Park near Mendocino open?

fotodog I just checked their website ( Van Damme SP) and there is nothing about being close. Its a wonderful park to choose, we've been there a couple of time ourselves and Van Damme is also one of the many en-route state parks in California, which means that you can without reservations stay overnight in their Day use area for a fee. In case of Van Damme that puts you right on the beach, you rig must be self contain and there is no tent camping in the Day use area, also your still can use all the facilities of the park. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Summer-Trip-2005/1136331301/384598592_qv5W3-L.jpg I also check the reservation link from the website and its working.

RE: Last Chance Get Away Of 2009-part2

Excellent trip there Alex, you two sure know how to get around. The plant behind the squirrel looks to be "Mormon Tea", so I guess he was getting his morning brew. No flat tires on that road? I had 2 when we did it, 1 coming in and 1 going out. I was flat tired of that road when we got out. Thanks again for the post, keep them coming my friend!! Morning Whazoo, no flat tires for us, there was a jeep at the Toroweap campsite that was sporting a streaded tire. A young couple had gotten there Honada Accord out there, no doubt with a lot of scrape marks on the under side.

RE: BLM camping in Utah

There is also another BLM campground pass HorseThief and just before the turn off to Dead Horse Point State Park. The view is breath taking, we had camped there in June of 2008 for a couple of days. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Other/Alex-and-Julies-Romps-to-1/298/350335609_dkBu6-L.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Other/Alex-and-Julies-Romps-to-1/302/350335775_vUCGk-L.jpg At this time it was still a free area.

Last Chance Get Away Of 2009-part2

Last Chance Get away of 2009 Our original plan was to visit Yosmite National Park and explore the surrounding area, but due to the spreading fire we change our plans at the time. After much discussion and some Internet searching it was decided to go a couple of areas that we hadn’t ever been to and re-visit a couple of national parks we’ve been to before. Grand Canyon North Rim Part2 On To Jacob Lake September 27,2009 You that old saying’ about the early bird catching the worm? We indeed did get up early, about 04:00am just to take some morning photos of the sun creeping over the yonder mountains. Julie was busy with art of making breakfast while I’m sitting outside gazing at the stars, sipping on the hot black brew. Zip, there’s a shooting star on a suicide mission to collide with the earth. Soon a couple more join their companion in a fiery death on their way to earth. Julie joined me bringing breakfast, she spots another streak across the lighten night for the sun is making itself known that a new day has arrived. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-132/701901950_Ecdj8-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-166/701901973_7q2Zz-M.jpg By the time we had packed some of our fellow campers were seeking out the morning sun. On the way out one our neighbor had shred one of his jeep tires, it looked light duty for this type of terrain. One young couple had some how managed to get their Honda Accord out here, for we shared our site with them, no room at the inn. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-193/701902919_jG3Ee-M.jpg Video Good Morning Good Bye Rolling along the rocky road in the shadow of the mountain Julie saw a couple of critters gathering and stuffing themselves on some tender plants. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-197/701902674_MwGeZ-M.jpg Video Morning Critters Once clear of the rocky road area we picked up speed till we reached the dust bog in the road, this time we went through it instead around. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-219/701903684_VM5Vb-M.jpg Video Playin' in the Dirt Stopping once again near Tuweep Ranger Station for an up and personal hands on with a piece of ancient road grading equipment. It was design to be pulled by a tractor or like vehicle. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-231/701903958_p3mMZ-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-232/701904619_sjUgq-M.jpg Saying good-bye to the Tuweep Station, we let it behind in a cloud of kicked up dirt. It was easy to travel at speeds of thirty plus, but we weren’t in that big of a hurry and would like to enjoy the flavor of day. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-245/701905139_CtmdC-M.jpg Besides watching nature at work as we motored on a grade dirt road, there were gone by signs of people’s hard work to make a living out here. Some of those remains of failure and not much left of those do exist. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-248/701905097_rDaof-M.jpg Even out here, ever once in awhile another vehicle is seen zooming to where we had come from. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-261/701905979_3AtVH-M.jpg With lots of open spaces and blue-sky seams to go on forever, a rare sight for someone from Southern California. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-268/701906023_iaF7o-M.jpg Out here just add a little water and the plant produce flowers and what do you get with a whole pool of water? http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-290/701906610_RaZYJ-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-299/701907296_wNWqE-M.jpg A few head of cattle were seen not far off the roadway as we approach another cattle guard, also a this point (16miles from Hwy389) cell phone signal was being received, pulling over to answer voice mails and making calls to loved ones. It was good to hear from people we know and love. I was looking around and what do my eyes see; now I’ve read about them, seen photos of them and this would be the first time to see one in the “flesh” as to say, none other an a Eathroamer. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-319/701907488_GNvAD-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-323/701907617_N49mY-M.jpg They paused for a short while and I asked a bunch of questions about their rig, they were good about answering my many inquires. I told them we had been in the Toroweap area and that’s their designation so they had some questions for me. Not long after our departure Hwy389 come into view. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-339/701908281_ZizNK-M.jpg Barreling down Hwy389 towards Fredonia this sign we came across, there seemed to be a math problem here. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-366/701909186_8G4oZ-M.jpg The visit in Fredonia, Arizona, was a quick affair with a brief stop at the visitor center to catch up on some news and weather. Always not wanting to run out of fuel I stopped at a local station to fill up and across the way is a fire station with an older fire truck in the drive way. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-374/701909679_nVTSh-M.jpg The drive to Jacob Lake was an enjoyable 2-lane road (Hwy67), with a stop at Le Fevre Overlook. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-391/701910684_YA7QN-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-389/701910676_JCm3G-M.jpg Findly arriving at Jacob Lake we parked next to a fellow TC traveler. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-413/701914009_cpm66-M.jpg Dropping in at the Kaibab Plateau Visitor Center, we were looking for a campground with hook ups for tonight. Kaibab Camper Village is where we told to go. The staff at Kaibab Camper Village is TC friendly and place us in a site well suited for our rig. The TC that was wait behind us was a couple from BC and had been TCing for years. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep1-417/701914547_TuNGt-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep2-001/702887392_SeYMM-M.jpg Once settled in our spot we did laundry and other necessary thing to keep the flies away. Julie was preparing dinner while I was taking a few photos of the campground, when I heard her yell out the stove won’t lite, yea you guessed ran out of propane. Not a problem for I always carry an extra tank and Julie was back to cooking in short order. Tomorrow we head into Grand Canyon-North Rim and see what we’ve heard about. Thanks To All For Traveling Along With Us. All comments and questions welcome.

RE: Norcold N300 Fridge Problem

Then explain why the safety valve for the propane portion won't open unless there is 12VDC to the 12VDC terminals on Norcold N300? I see we're going to have a running debate about this subject, so my question to Sportsman Matt is what year is your Norcold N300? I"ll try this out on my N300 this weekend and report back. Matt - does your propane shut off (and meter go back to the left) if you disconnect your battery while running on propane? -steve Right now I have my Norcold N300 running on propane, all 12vdc is disconnected ( battery and solar and no shore power) and the little indicator meter is well into the green. If I have I'll make a video to show this that no 12vdc is needed to run propane on a Norcold N300 or the N300.3 model I found out about this nice feature when I first had the camper and made the mistake of running it in the 12vdc mode, went off to do some hiking and came back to a dead battery.I switch it to propane mode and it lit off, this model is a pure manual operation and the 12vdc is only used for the heating element. Downloadable manual is at this LINK

RE: Norcold N300 Fridge Problem

Correction to the last post. The Norcold N300 requires 12VDC when running on propane to keep the gas valve open and the flame sense circuit working. Found that out the hard way on my last trip, turned off the 12VDC Main Switch in the camper and couldn't get the Fridge to light on Propane. On 110VAC the 12V controls the thermostat which runs a relay that is either on or off to the 110VAC Heater Element which is in a tube in the chimney near the flame chamber. My guess would be to make sure you have 12VDC and 110VAC at the terminals. You can tell if the 110VAC is working after several hours the chimney will be warm to touch, the heater element will be very hot (can caouse a burn). If you run the propane first, don't try switching and seeing if the 110VAC works until the whole system has been off for a while, as the only waay to check the 110 to see if it's running is to check for heat, which if you were running on propane, will give a false heat sense, making you think it actually works when it may actually be burned out. All due respect Norcolds N300 doesn't use 12vdc to run on LP,it uses the same method same old time wall heaters, a flame heat a thermal couple which in turn generates a very small amount of electrical power, that power in turn holds the safty valve open and keeps feeding the flame and it will keep doing this as long as there's propane or something cloggs or breaks. When the camper battery is dead it's nice to know that you still have cold beer in the refrigerator.

RE: Norcold N300 Fridge Problem

There is NO control board on a Norcold N300, I have one and had to solve some problems with it. The N300 requires at least 10.5 inch of water pressure to flame correctly and it gets dirt easy. Make sure its clean, pull it out and physically inspect it, clean it. If you have proper WP and it still doesn't light or stay lite check the push button pinz spark. If that OK but the flame won't stay lit check the thermal couple if that OK, then on to the next pieces to be checked that would be the LP safty valve and believe or not the selector switch. I've had everyone of the above pieces fail on me in the last 7 years, unfortunate its a real pain in the rear to trouble shoot those items since you have to pull the refrigerator out of the cabinet. One more thing about the select switch, the internal contact can ohms out ok but it still will have too much resists across the contact to allow the milli-current from the thermal couple to cross.
