RE: Mammoth Cave in KY? Camping Recommendation?

We syayed at the NP campground. There was one site with hook ups, a camp host during the high season but it was up for nightly rental when we were there about six weeks ago. I would not count on it being available. We found the campground quite nice though.

RE: Can we afford it?

PER DAY: $100 while traveling, $25 while parked.
Simple, but pretty much true (as long as we watch where the money is going, can go higher pretty fast otherwise.)
We also budget $100 a day while on the road. Yes we do go over budget some days on fuel so we occasionally have to camp for a few days to make up the difference. It's not too bad if you are not in a hurry. Slowing down means we see a lot more though.

We stayed in Ssquim at an RV park. Where ever you stay make sure you have reservations in place. We almost had to turn around and leave.

RE: I 80 Donnors Pass

I like 50 across NV. Austin and Eureka are neat little towns. I prefer it to hwy 6. I took both I80 and 50 to Sacramento this year. I was a little concerned about climbing out of the tahoe basin to echo summit but it was a piece of cake. I think I will be using 50 until I80 construction is finished. I did not like all the jersey wall and we did have two sections of major delays. We also lost a tire on the toad.

RE: Camping - US 395 Tahoe-Death Valley

I have always liked nort lake above Bishop as a great spot for fall colors. June lake loop is also nice. We like oh ridge campground in june lake about the best of all but there are many nice places along 395. My son says the colors are really good right now. I hope you enjoy your trip. We have been on the road since july and I do miss the sierras.

I would agree there is no wrong answer as each place is a personal choice. Mine would be:
Yosemite
The entire Oregon coast
Yellowstone
Grand Canyon
Mesa Verde
Mount Rushmore
The Gateway Arch
Washington DC
Charleston SC
Moab UT
These are in no particular order.

RE: On the road at last

Congratuations!
We hope to be joining your real soon. We have had our house for sale since November but no movement yet. We have our class A now and are going to Messa, Arizona for the winter wether the house sells or not. Still have lots of stuff to get rid of but are sort of in limbo until something happens with the house. What were your experiences in getting rid of "STUFF"?
Hope your home sells soon. We got lucky and the house sold before we even contacted the realestate agent. The neighbor saw we were moving out and said her brother was looking to move. He came by and bought the house. As far as getting rid of stuff, we could havve done better. We still have a larges sea train container sitting on our sons property. Most of the furniture and thing we did not want we called the local thrift store and donated it. They even picked it up. I think if I went through the stuff again I would be more critical about what I keep. For now we have been on the road for almost two weeks and have only made 225 miles. This is great.

RE: On the road at last

Excellent news! Hope that fulltiming lives up to and exceeds all your expectations! Slow down and enjoy the ride as Rockhillmanor suggests...don't forget that you don't have to make 300 or more miles in a day -no rush! And if I might make a small suggestion....avoid the big attractions until school's back in session so you won't be fighting for a good site with hundreds of families all determined to see America in one huge gulp. Where ya headed...besides somewhere cooler??
After visiting with the kids we are going to head across the north part of the nation We have always wanted to see New England in the fall.
Firedude, code 2 it is we need to take time to smell the flowers. I do miss my ladder truck though ( ex-engineer ).

Well the house is sold, escrow has closed and the money is in an interest bearing account. We have finally hit the road for our long anticipated trip to see the country. Can't wait to see something new.

RE: san francisco to reno on hwy 80

East of Truckee there is concrete barriers along both sides of each lane. Not muuch room for my rig. Sometimes traffic is stop and go. Not a nice drive. We blew a tire also in the construction area. I won't do I-80 again until the construction is complete. 50 concerned me with the drop from echo summit to Tahoe but it was an easy drive. 88 is also a nice drive. Just my opinion, of course. We have a 31 ft MH and toad.

RE: creekside rv park

I have never stayed at this park, so no help there. It looks like they pack you in fairly close by driving by. I believe it is for sale also. It is a beautiful area though. Lots of FS camps nearby. Parchers resort closer to south lake also has RV sites.
