RE: Fifth Wheel Hitch Selection

Do not use the dry weight to figure out how much hitch you need, unless you plan to camp with an empty trailer!

RE: Question re: GCWR - Loaded Vehicle Weight = Tow Capacity

5,000 could also be the limit of the receiver. 5,000 is a very typical number for mid sized SUVs.

RE: king pin height to hitch

I never get mine the same each time. I just eyeball it, back in and if I am too high, I just lower it some more. If I am low, the truck will just squat down a bit as I back in.
You don't want to get hung up on minutia like this. You don't carry a tape measure for this stuff, just eyeball it.

RE: Question re: GCWR - Loaded Vehicle Weight = Tow Capacity

What is the GVWR of the highlander? You are correct in what you ask, UNLESS your result is higher. You use that formula to get an actual towing figure if your truck weighs a lot.
Arbitrary example: You have a GCVWR of 12,000, and your stated towing capacity is 7,000lbs. But your truck weighs 6,000 fully loaded, you ACTUAL towing capacity is not 7,000 but only 6,000 now.

RE: Best Route Through/Around LA from SD?

Depends what day of the week. The 210 at 8am on a weekday is not very desirable...as suggested, wait until after 9am. If you'd like to avoid LA AND the Grapevine, then head up further on the 15 (you get Tejon but I like that one better)and cut over to Bakersfield.I think you meant Cajon. Tejon is the pass on I-5.

RE: HELP! Insurance claim may be denied

Buy an hour of time from a lawyer. Also file a claim with the insurance commissioner in their state. Write to trailer life, they have a section where they help people and put some pressure, via a letter, on the company and print it in their magazine. Hopefully the insurance company won't want the bad press and will step up.
What insurance company is it?

How long will you live in an RV park? You can get cable in most parks and probably pay for cable internet.

Guys - he is a gamer - his avatar will be dead before he knows someone is behind him or he'll run into a brick wall on a race course because he didn't turn in time. The 2-second lag will be literally a killer!
DaveI don't game, so I am not aware of the requirements. Satellite does have a latency issue, and at times can take a second or two to send messages via IM. I have actually sat next to someone on wifi, and I am on my satellite, I hit send and it takes a second or two to get to them.

RE: Internet help

Look at Sprint mobile broadband. I use it all the time and it has great speed with no limits. Go here and check to see if you have coverage in your area. http://www.sprint.com/business/products/products/evdoEnterZip.jspThey ALL have a 5gb limit. You might have an old account and be grandfathered in, but they all have a limit now.
EDIT: http://nextelonline.nextel.com/NASApp/onlinestore/en/Action/SubmitRegionAction?isUpgradePathForCoverage=false&currZipCode=&upgradeOption=&nextPage=DisplayPlans&equipmentSKUurlPart=%3FcurrentPage%3DratePlanPage&filterStringParamName=filterString%3DMobile_Broadband_Cards_Filter&newZipCode=92503Terms site
Looks like Sprint offers unlimited only in 4G areas, which aren't that widespread. If you are in a 3G area, which most of us are, then you still have a 5gb limit.

Microsoft's new Essentials is by far the best of the free solutions. I am running it and it runs invisibly. I got the low down from Leo LePorte the tech guy.

RE: Yellowstone in the Spring

I stayed at Madison the first week it opened, I think that is in May, or was it late April? Anyway, it was great. No crowds, the roads were clear, lots of baby bison.

At 8 am the 210 will most likely be a parking lot in the Pasadena area. Try hitting it after 9.

RE: Internet help

Wireless only has two options that I am aware of. Aircard from a cell phone company and satellite.
Aircard has the least initial investment and can be very fast if you have a good connection. It does have a 5gb per month limit, so that could be problematic for you.
Satellite can cost anywhere from $1000-$5000 and more in an initial investment. A tripod system is the least expensive and most versatile compared to a roof mounted satellite system.
I have a hughes satellite that I setup on a tripod. They have various pricing plans, each with their own limits. There is no monthly limit, but there is a MB limit per 24 hour period. Mine is 200 mb per 24 hour period. Other plans are higher.
Now that doesn't mean I can only download 200 mb in an hour. I use a monitor which helps me keep from going over that, while still watching videos and downloading other content.
Satellite speed is hit and miss sometimes. Sometimes it is slow, sometimes is screams.
I am sure I can think of a dozen more points to type, but my hands hurt LOL

RE: 5th wheel towing estimate

That 4500 number is the max the hitch can handle. You need to find out what payload you have left. Weigh the truck full of fuel, with hitch installed, and full of all the stuff you will take when camping, including people.
Take that number and subtract it from the truck's GVWR. Arbitrary example: truck weighs 9,000 and you have a GVWR of 11,500. You can have a pin weight of 2500 lbs.
That number will also tell you how much your 5er can weigh. Take the weight again, say 9,000 and subtract it from your GCVWR. Say it's 21,000-9,000, then you can have a 5er that weighs 12,000 with a pin up to 2,500.
So find your actual numbers and then shop for a fiver that fits.

RE: Verizon tethered feature, Netflix, and watching movies

Up until a month ago, my local Video rental shop still carried VHS. So if I said, let's go rent a DVD, that might imply we are going to ignore the VHS section. So I say video or movie for any kind of show on DVD or VHS.
