I hear the maintenance argument a lot, about diesel being more money, but then less often, but am only familiar with Ford, so I wonder when it's mentioned what the schedules are. Thanks blt2ski.

What is the manufacturer's recommendations regarding oil changes for diesels (GM/Dodge), at what mileage? I know Ford didn't make a distinction between gas or diesel, they were both recommended at 5000 miles. Do GM and Dodge recommend different maintenance intervals for gas and diesel?

On my Dodge the recommended schedule is 7500 miles for severe and 15000 for regular

as tennessee Bob says the '03 to '07 5.9 Cummins has a 7500/15000 oil change schedule.

Agree with blunote on fuel consumption vs miles driven. My truck in sig will average 12.5 towing my 11200 GVWR 5er. It also gets 22+ mpg on long trips where several tanks can be averaged. Averages on that 600+ mile a week work commute ran 21-21.5 week in and week out in the summer and in the winter on the same old boring roads. Never had a city for city mpgs.
My payback for the Cummins option (3450 bucks) came around 45k miles due to long commuting and lower fuel costs in '03/'04. Only a comparable size gasser engine in hp/torque can be compared for a apples to apples comparasions for my use as I need the diesels power to pull other non RV trailes. My mpgs are penciled averages and not just a best tank.

My reasons for a diesel will not/does not work for all diesel truck owners unles they drive my same or simular conditions with a diesel powered truck that gets the better mpgs. Although just about all my neighbours drive a diesel and in some cases he and she both drive a diesel truck.

A new RV.net member made a comment on another topic that after reading most of the 200+ pages of diesel vs gas it looked like new gasser boys every 4-5 months trying to convince the same old diesel boys that diesels didn't get ................. and there was no difference.

Ace, I can not, nor will I say the the V8 diesels used in fords are the same, BUT< if in a Navistar, the V8 diesels have oil change intervals that are more in line with the cummins listings. My 96 6.5td was actually shorter intervals than my 454 BB gas, 2500/5000 vs 3000/6000 miles. I use the in dash moniter, or about 7500 for my 05 dually. My 92 Navistar NA 7.3, ie pre turbo models, with 16 gts of oil and a 1+ qt oil filter is something like 15K miles before changing no matter the useage, altho I do it more than that. That could be 2 yrs for the miles I put on that truck.

I am thinking that the dmax has a slightly longer change than the BB or SB gas rigs. I'll look it up the next time I hop in my dmax, probably tomorrow and see what if any difference there is. BUT< with the GM diesels, they typically do not have the oil quantity that CUmmins and the Navistar diesels have, so it would not suprise me that the oil changes will be more on the equal to side than what Ford or Dodge should have on there rigs. My 6.5T used 8 qts, the 454 7qts, same filter for both.

although the '03 to '07 5.9 Cummins had the 7500/15000 oil change schedule the new 6.7 Cummins comes with a new oil change system based on a 7500 miles service on the overhead EVIC console. The new oil changes system is duty based and may fluctuate with how the engine is operated. The info comes from Cummins. They also mention that driving styles such as stop and go driving can increase the frequency of the engine oil change interval.

Oil changes: my big block took 7.25 quarts, my diesel takes 10 quarts and the change interval is significantly longer with my diesel, so it's less per year in oil change costs.

My 7.3 and 6.0 PSD's takes twice as much oil as my 8.1 big block. In fact I am still using the 5W-40 Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel oil that I have after I sold my 6.0 PSD in 2007. If I only put 10 quarts in my PSD's I would be in deep trouble down the road. I thought the Duramax oil change was more than 10 quarts

PSD's use more oil than most due to the HEUI system...they have oil-fired injectors. Not sure on the 6.0 (15, maybe?), but the 7.3 PSD uses 14 quarts. The 7.3 IDI uses 10. Not sure about Rams, but the Cummins in my truck also uses 10 quarts of oil.

IIRC, the T444E (International's MDT version of the 7.3) uses 18 quarts.

The 7.3 IDI in my 92 navistar uses 14 or 16 if the filter is changed. 10 qts must be what Ford used?!?! in there versions.

The 7.3 IDI uses 10 quarts of oil in Ford pickups, correct, probably for packaging reasons. The MDT versions had larger pans. IIRC, the factory 7.3 turbos hold one extra quart.

Of course, the old GMC I used to drive used seven. That's seven GALLONS of oil. (It was an 8V71 in a 4106 highway coach.)
