Has anyone been back of beyond in this area?
DeLorme and Google Earth don't indicate much in the way of options to get up in the hills.

I know of no free boondocking in the area of the Great Sand Dunes. Give us a few more details of where you are trying to camp.

Unless you have a truck camper and flotation tires there is no way to get back towards Medano Pass for camping with a trailer, and that is where I assume you are asking about.

There is also a NFS campground just outside Crestone, ohterwise there is no boondocking around the park.

Specifically in the Sangre De Christo's in the general area of the Sand Dunes. I thought I'd read a post that mentioned some spots but my search did not yield any results.

There are some on the west side of the valley, along the highway between Saguache and Hwy 50 to Gunnison.

I don't consider these to be "near" the Sand Dunes tho.

And since you said the Sangres..... most of the campground or boondocking spots are on the east side of them, accessible from the Wet Mountain Valley.

In other words....... not much available in the San Luis Valley.
