If you turn off at Tom's Place and drive up Rock Creek road to Mosquito Flats, there are several state CGs on the way up. The first one, French Camp is close, and has a dump station.

I haven't dry camped up there yet but will probably next year. Anyway if you are near Mammoth Lakes drive into town. Just as you get there on the right is a tourist info center. Go inside and tell them you're looking for places to dry camp. We did this last year and they were very helpful. Gave us nice maps with tips of nice places to stay all around the local forests. They also had tips to other places for quite a distance in both directions. Since it was winter and very cold we opted to stay at the camp ground on the other side of the road. Ok camp ground, about $50 a night as I recall. But the electricity was nice for the extra heater to run!

These are national forest campgrounds, not state campgrounds.

Isn't there a Walmart in Ridgecrest? (I'm assuming you're just looking for a place to spend the night).
