I'm looking to do a long weekend type of camping trip, as far into the middle of nowhere as possible given the limitation of a not more than ~8-10hr drive from the Dallas area. Looking for a no facilities 4x4 required site accessible to a crew cab dually 4x4 truck with a relatively light truck camper. Something in a mountainous / canyon area would be nice.
BIG BEND AREA! It is about 10 hrs from the Dallas area and there are many places that are just as you described. It is beautiful, but make sure you take plenty of water. It is hot down there now. Be mindful of snakes as well. Look it up on the internet, it is one of my very favorite places on earth.
Big bend is one of the areas I've been looking at. The camper has a 36gal water tank, plus whatever else I bring along, so a short trip shouldn't be an issue.
I think you would really enjoy the area. We have spent lots of time there and enjoy it more each trip.
Before you get to Study Butte, about 20-25 miles, there is a turn off to Terlingua Ranch. There are many roads in there, some of them 4wd only, that bare exploration. Not sure if it is open now, but they did have a premative rv park, the ranch office is 13 miles off the highway, the last 3 of which is a dirt road. When we started going there, the road was 10 miles of dirt.
The national park has lots of good scenery and dry camping areas too. Just be mindful of the bears and big cats. If you get to the park, be sure to go to Santa Elena canyon, beautiful. There is so much to see, I am sure you will make many more trips down there.
Was looking at something like their "Guale #2" site in the middle of nowhere. I think that should be accessible, I've got a new F350 CC DRW 4x4 to haul my camper.
Big Bend is nice, but do not limit yourself to Tx. Try the Mena Ark area, Kiamichi Wilderness in Ok, the flat lands and water area of La. Hard to beat these places for boondocking and solitude.
Big Bend (NP) and Big Bend Ranch (SP) are great. The twenty mile long road into the SP was so 'washboarded' it took us over two hours to drive in with our Tacoma/Scamp in April but you can definitely find some isolation. Lincoln NF in NM may be cooler and also has some good spots for boondocking.
