I'm a teacher, but have not been able to find a full-time, permanent teaching position in this area/economy. We have a small population and at least 5 colleges pumping out teachers right and left. My husband and I split up a little over a year ago and I'm faced with the possibility of having no job next school year (the position I have now is stimulus-money temporary).
So, I'm investigating the idea of leaving the area and starting over somewhere where the economy is a little stronger. I understand it's bad everywhere - but even in the best of times, SW Virginia is not a good place to make a living.
I've lived in Northern VA, Las Vegas and Houston. I like small town living better. I don't like humidity, but do enjoy outdoor activities. I like the Northern Nevada, Northern California/Oregon area as far as climate goes, but that's a bit far to be away from my parents who live here.
So tell me the towns/smaller cities you think I'd like and why.

Go to teachers-teachers.com and open a free account. Once you have that done you can fill out an electronic application and cover letter. You can select any teaching job(s) you're interested in and select as many parts of the country you are interested in moving to. You get frequent posts of teaching jobs available that you are qualified for and the school district provides you with their website so you can check them out. If you contact them about an interest they may e-mail you or ask you to call them and speak to someone in charge. When we moved here from FLAUSA we used them and it's been four years. We are also using them now to find a place for next year that will need subs and allow us to work when we want and camp the rest of the time. Good luck.

Good luck in your search.
Don't bother coming to SoCal. All of the school districts are hurting that they've laid off a lot of teachers.

I'm licensed to teach Prek-6 in VA and TN. I'm thinking about adding some middle school endorsements. In VA, I need only pass the Praxis test in each subject to add 7th & 8th to my elementary licensure.
Sharon - no offense, but I wouldn't come to SoCal anyway. I've been there - beautiful place, but not my cup of tea. From what I've heard, I doubt that a teacher could support a family on a single income there. That's another factor in my decision. I want a place where the cost of living is low enough that I can pay my bills and maybe go out to a movie every once in a while on a teacher's salary.
Thanks for the suggestion of teachers-teachers.com. I'll check that out.

Have you considered Ohio? Teacher pay is pretty good (for teachers that is) around Cleveland. You can live in poverty in Meigs county, the pay there is unbelievably low!
IF you get MS math or science licensure it would really help your chances. In Ohio there is a HUGE need for special ed support specialists.
I had a cousin that used to teach in KY, Lousiville and Lexington schools payed pertty well (for Kentucky anyyway).

Forget anywhere on the left coast. Teachers are being laid off and there pretty much are no job openings.

Delaware isn't all that bad, cost of living is low, close to VA. Or I can put you in touch with my daughter, a teacher in Clarksville, TN.
Best of luck in whatever you decide.
