I guess I am writing this for my wife, but I also wish to know.....
Today we went to a fabric store; they were having a sale on Simplicity patterns. I/we thought there would be a line-up at the door. There were two people.
Who sews anymore? Apparently fabric stores are disappearing (sp?) and then the fabric is not made-in-US....and is inferior.
I take in LDS women sew; witness the dress in their compound in TX.
We save lotsa $ with Brenda's repair jobs and I get to have whatever I want as does she, in "fashions"

With the cost of clothing at discount stores, it is not worth sewing anymore. Even Wal-Mart is getting out of selling fabric (& patterns) as there is more money to be made selling Electronics. I love to sew, but now it's maily costumes and craft items or household items I want....curtains, tablecloths, and placemats.

In the Indianapolis area, Hancock fabrics have closed (at least the few I knew of). Walmart no longer carries patterns and fabric. Hobby Lobby carries sewing supplies and fabric, but not a big selection, and not of high quality.
I know of one household fabrics store, and am sure there are probably others, but they are mom and pop stores rather than chain stores. I've seen some quilting supply stores, again, not chains.
With all of that happening, the JoAnn Fabric and Crafts near me has reduced the amount of fabrics they carry in the store. I would have thought they would pick up the pace with the reduction in competition. I also would have expected them to step up the quality of fabrics they carry for quilting in order to compete with the smaller stores.
I've wanted some specific fabric for a couple of years. Haven't been able to find it on the internet and when I've asked about it in the store, they are no help in locating the items. So my search continues for fabric and an already made product (haven't had any luck with that, either) .

Searching the "net" we have found some good deals on some cotton duck and poly cotton....think it was "on-line fabrics".
It is difficult to find good fabrics.

Sadly, it's cheaper to buy off the rack than make your own. We do things with a local community theatre and they're having a very hard time finding affordable fabric for their costumes. It's a lost art.

No sewing for me. I hate to sew and iron. I take everything to the cleaners and the seamstress.

Perhaps the last great bastion of sewing comes from those who've spent the money to buy a machine and needle capable of sewing patches on leather vests and jackets. Usually they also do a good deal of embroidery on the same leather goods, and it is pretty good money.
Now if I can find someone who takes enough pride in their work to remove the liner, do the sewing, and then replace the liner, now THAT person is a keeper and worth the money. Probably 98% of those sewing patches now, just sew through everything.
One thing about sewing patches for bikers, you'll never go without customers unless you do poor work, or you happen to charge enough that the biker or his partner is willing to hand-sew the patches on themselves.

I still sew, but like many I do not sew clothing much anymore. Just the occasional shirt. Mostly I sew baby blankets and am trying to learn how to quilt.
Premade clothing is just cheaper and take less time.

I used to sew alot - including my business suits. I just don't have time anymore, and my sewing now is mostly repair and window treatments! And might I add that my windows look great!
