RE: Blu Ray Players with standard DVD's

Upconverted DVDs may appear to look better on an HDTV but they don't actually gain resolution. Upconversion may produce a 1080 signal from a 480i DVD but you can't "create" resolution that wasn't there before. The upconverted signal interpolates the data between existing points to approximate what probably would have been there. However, the data is a guess not a real resolution improvement.
True, but an HD LCD TV is doing the same thing anyway. It's interpolating the standard DVD's 480i resolution video signal to fit full screen 720p or 1080 HD native screen resolution. Otherwise, the LCD screen would only use a portion of its native resolution to accurately display the 480i image, which would result in black bars on all sides of the screen.

Actually, I meant upconvert a standard 480i DVD to 1080 HD. Above is an example of my older Magnavox BluRay playing a training DVD on my Toshiba HD LCD via HDMI. Note that the Toshiba is seeing a 1080i HD signal, whereas the original DVD was recorded at 480i. The video looks much better than this example photo.

RE: Blu Ray Players with standard DVD's

If you're connecting the BluRay player via HDMI, most every player will upconvert a standard DVD to HD for playback. So kind of a moot point to look specifically for a progressive scan feature(for component?). Even my $29. refurbished Toshiba BluRay upconverts 480p DVDs to 1080p HD via HDMI, besides WiFi streams and plays back HD video from USB drives.

RE: What is Optimizer Pro?

Did it come pre-installed with your computer? Calling it malware could be somewhat of an exaggeration. More of a paid app that may offer little benefit over freeware apps that can achieve similar results. Just uninstall it.
Using a free uninstall utility such as RevoUninstaller or Comodo Program Manager may do a more thorough job of getting rid of all its program remnants.

RE: Cradlepoint MB1400?

Does the MB1400 play well with filtered wifi connections, which require a splash screen login????
These are typically referred to as captive portals.

RE: Win8 Tablet--Is It a "PC"?

Nope, Windows 8 RT Surface tablets are designed for ARM processors. Won't run existing Windows 8 PC programs.
You would have to look for a tablet that comes with something similar to an Intel Atom or Celeron processor for instance, that can support the PC version on Windows. Generally, big bucks, and low battery life.

RE: tablet with flash player?

WIN 8 Surface tablets may support Flash, but not what I would consider inexpensive by an means. I picked up an Acer 11.6" core2duo Netbook, which is almost as fast as my Asus Core i3 notebook, with WIN 7 home premium installed for about $250. Upgraded to WIN 8 for $14.99. And not only fully supports Flash, but all my existing WIN programs.

Quote "Dedicated DENON LINK cable made of high-purity copper wire..." I think in this case, pure gold wiring would be cheaper, and could actually qualify as an investment? :B

RE: Cradlepoint MB1400?

For those who may be interested in WiFi MultiMedia(WMM), you can find an FAQ from the WiFi Alliance(PDF).
Open Source router firmware such as DD-WRT has supported WMM since 2006.

RE: Walmart, Internet on the Go

What happened to Walmart's Internet On The Go??? Walmart's website states, "Not Available at this time
Try going directly to the homepage
Internet On The Go
Internet On The Go website's "where to buy" takes me to Walamrt's website and Walmart's website states, "not available at this time".
Are you seeing something different??????????
Does anyone have an update? I also see "not available at this time" on Walmart's website. I thought that this would be good option for Canadians like us who travel in the states from time to time. But maybe not, if it doesn't exist anymore??
I wouldn't rely on Walmart's website for stock availability. My own experience has been that it's notoriously inaccurate.
I've had instances where items were indicated in stock online, and none were actually available at that particular store. Walmart's managers will generally substitute another similar product for either the same or equivalent savings if at a significantly higher price.

Case in point, I was just at a local Walmart were Internet On The Go hotspot was indicated as being out-of-stock. Yet, found three of these in the store. My advice is to call the particular store directly.

RE: Problem updating my state maps

http://i.imgur.com/i9PC9oH.png
The Visited States Map by epgSoft should only give you GIF, JPEG, or PNG as file format options. In the future when you make a map, instead of right-clicking and selecting Save Image As, just left click and drag the map off to your desktop. This should maintain the file format you selected on the website.
But you may want to try this fix. Just change the file extension from .PNG to .GIF, which will make the forum software think it is the correct file format and allow you to upload your signature:
VistedStatesMap.png --> VistedStatesMap.gif
This doesn't actually change the file format, and your map should display as a PNG image with a GIF extension. Note my map signature below is actually a PNG file, which supposedly cannot be uploaded as a signature photo.
