RE: How much weight is too much weight?

How much over gvwr is too much?
- if the 2,500 lbs is based on the manufacturer's claimed weight, it will end up more like 3,500 lbs with accesories, liquids, gear, etc
- whatever you tow on a 24" extended hitch will add twice the tongue weight to the rear axle
- practically every swr truck you see hauling a hardside truck camper is over the gvwr between 500 and 2,000 lbs
- how much over gvwr is still safe depends on a lot of things like, how fast you drive, your driving skills in a heavily loaded top heavy high profile vehicle, how well you maintain your truck (and tires in particular), what you are towing while hauling the camper, etc

RE: geocaching and truck campers

We found one by accident climbing around in the rocks at Tin Cup Pass, Co. It was a metal ammo box setting between two big rocks. It had a bunch of small "trinkets" folks had left in it. It also had a sign up log with comments from all the folks who had found it.

RE: Notice of Trip Reports ownership transition, June 8th 2013

Silver,
Thanks for all your hard work in organizing and maintaining the TC Trip Report Thread. You made it look easy, but I know how much time and effort goes into running a thread like that. Thanks again; you created a great foundation for others to build on and I hope it continues for many years.
Enjoy your semi-retirement..... RV.net gold watch is in the mail. :)

RE: Inside Shower vs Outside Shower

We've never used the outside shower. We've used the inside shower A LOT.
Exactly the opposite for us.
Ditto. We use the outside shower 20 to 1 over the inside shower.

RE: Oh "Snap"

Mine did the exact same thing driving frost heaves in Yellowstone.
I replaced the broken grade 5 bolts with grade 8 bolts with some large washers and never broke another one.
Good Luck,

RE: What Are The Upsides & Downsides To Driving A DRW Truck?

I thought the DRW guys were the ones with the vestigial tires?
Hey, those extra two tires are only 10% vestgial; I still use them everytime I go around a corner. :)

RE: What Are The Upsides & Downsides To Driving A DRW Truck?

Hope you are having a good time where ever you are.
Working in San Antonio this week. Just when I thought most of my traveling days were behind me; they pulled me back in. Saw the Alamo yesterday after work; it was much bigger than I thought. But I would much rather be on I-70 headed to the Rockies in our drw with the camper in the bed and the jeep on the hitch.

This forum is the way it should be, open conversation even if we disagree.
Ditto. As long as folks can civily discuss an issue without name-calling or disrespecting others, the discussion should go on; even if the other person is one of those closed-minded hardheaded srw neanderthals. ;)

RE: The hammer comes down on Kenseth and team

Big money has ruined NASCAR; this is just one more example of it. It used to be about cars, brands, teams, drivers, owners, tracks and fans. Now its just about money, money, money, money, money, money and more money.

RE: Lance truck campers TPO Nose construction

Interesting....but personally I would not produce a promotional video for my products with a dumpster behind me.
Unless I was in the trash business.
Yes I noticed that also. I have to agree with you on a marking point of view.
It's worse than you think. I ran the video backwards and it says, "Dooooon't buuuuuy Arctiiiiiic Foooooox...........". :E :E

RE: Use of air bags

Here is what I have decided to try. I can't go wrong keeping the airbags. They would be useful if I ever get a heavier camper, can use them as is for leveling at the campsite and going down the road, and can help to keep the truck at the right attitude. Based upon what most have offered, I will add the Stabile Loads and replace my shocks.
With your camper loaded and 0 pressure in the airbags, how much clearance do you have top and bottom airbag brackets? You may not have enough clearance to air them down enough to fully engage the stablelifts. You may have to remove the airbags to take full advantage of the stableloads and your oem overload springs.

RE: Use of air bags

Thanks for your responses. I will first try different pressures, and will include lowering the air to bring the overloads back into play. Sounds like I should be considering Stabiloads either way.
How much rear sag are you willing to live with? With airbags, you can bring the rear of the truck up. With non-adjustable overload springs, spacers, etc, you will have significant rear sag.

RE: Use of air bags

I had airbags on out 2001 F-350 hauling a 4k lb camper and I liked them. I generally ran about 90 psig as I recall.
On your rig, you need to test it at different airbag pressures to see what works best. Start out at a high pressure, drive it around some, let 10 psig out and test again. You may find that you cannot run them at zero pressure with the camper in the bed because the upper and lower airbag bracket may come into contact with each other.
Did the dealer install the airbags with seperate air fittings?
Ultimately any srw truck is going to rock around some with a large high CG load in the bed. You do what you can to reduce it to a minimum, but there will always be some.
Good Luck,
Brad

RE: Northstar quality?

There is no particle board in northstars AT ALL. The cabinetry is not particle board. Having solid real wood cabinetry is not practical for light campers like northstars. If it's not particle board and it's not real wood, what is it?
Unkownstium...
Exactly, you get the weight savings of unobtanium at a much lower cost. ;)

RE: Happijac Question

One other thing, I would not get those turn-buckles too tight. IMO, a little snug is plenty. Trucks flex; too snug and you may damage something if you get in and ackward situation.
