RE: MS Streets/Trips and Netbook

Thanks for all of your replies. I will wait a bit to purchase either MS S&T or a dedicated GPS unit. I have been reading some of the reviews of the Garmin 1490T, sounds good but appears to need some more software updates. Any thoughts regarding this unit?
Fossilhound
Buy S&T without the GPS and use that for planning. Then buy a cheap GPS for the vehicle. It is easier to carry an address written on a piece of paper out to the truck than the laptop each day. If you know what city you are headed to, then you can set that to destination, and then look for that camp ground in the POI of the GPS.
15-25 for the S&T, and 100-130 for a cheap TomTom.

RE: Wrecks Due to Being Overweight?

I see a lot of discussion about pin weight and truck limitations. I'm curious, has anyone here actually had a first hand experience of having a wreck which was found to be a direct cause of being over the manufacture's recommended weights for the tow vehicle? I'm not saying being overweight cannot cause a wreck. I was just wondering if anyone here has actually had one as a result of it. If so would you please share info on the truck / trailer combo.
A few years ago on I5 North of Marysville, Wa traffic slowed and a 5th wheel in the hammer lane (Was not allowed in that lane) could not stop and when to the inside shoulder and then across the median and killed three people in the North bound lanes. WSP hauled the pickup and trailer to an impound yard.
A year or so later the pickup driver got a ticket for 560 dollars or something like that. There may have been civil cases filed.

And always look at it with the slides both out and in, making notes for what is not accessible with the slides in. Chris

RE: MS Streets/Trips and Netbook

We used S&T is the truck for two years, then bought a Tomtom. I found it a pain to put the laptop in and out of the truck each day, and was concerned about theft. We used a 12 V travel power supply and a powered exteral Sony stereo speaker. Like the large screen and features. Still do route planning in S&T and put each days destination in the Tomtom. Bought the cheapest Tomtom I could get and do not worry if it walks, as it is password protected - dummy(theif)!!!!
We did not get M&S GPS as it was not that good back then. Later they had a top knotch unit.

RE: Switched from DTV SD to HD, Aiming the Slimline Dish

Aligned another dish today. Set it at 106 tilt, 49 up and 149 degrees. 101, came right in, then dialed in 103. They had been working on it for a couple hours before they came to the RC race track looking for help!

Ditch the extra fuel. Why do you need that anyway? Chris

RE: Cedar Creek vs Montana -

We owned two Forrest River products prior to the Montana, and we will never
buy another Forrest River.
Happy and save New Year to all.
SARGE
Forrest River has many lines of trailers from entry to upper mid levels, so maybe your FR trailers where lemons and oranges, and your Montana is an apple!
And over time all trailers have improved on features and decor!

We are at Canyon Vistas in Gold Canyon, Az and we have 140 rigs coming in this week! That is almost a quarter of the park spaces.

RE: Cedar Creek vs Montana -

There are 35 Montanas and 8 Cedarcreeks here" Now there is a good idea.Lets settle the arguement on which is better by counting the number of said brands in the campgrounds.. It is as good a method as any???/
Including ours there are only 4 Montana's here at this florida C.G. We see no Cedar Creeks.. Yet..
We only have a few Mobile Suites in the park here, so all the Montana's MUST be better trailers?????????
NOT!
That why I said Montana PHENOMENON! They are not better or worst than any other mid level trailer. They gained traction in the market place that no one has been able to equal. It is not that they are any better than the other mid level trailers - its a Montana PHEOMENON! Someone is always going to be out front, but they ended up way out front. I would call it luck, as they have had their share of frame issues along the way to the top of the sales charts.

RE: Cedar Creek vs Montana -

I really don't know but right now we are in a southern Rv resort with 100 sites. There are 35 Montanas and 8 Cedarcreeks here. Also I understand for the last 5 or so years Montanas have been the largest selling units. We have friends That really use theirs and both of them love them with a lot of miles on them..IMHO Happy new year
I posted this comment on page two of this thread. "Of course is is a little less of a MASS produced product than the Montana PHENOMENON!"
As just about everyone has pointed out, all the mid level trailers are about the same quality. So how does one figure out the "Montana PHENOMENON", selling about as many mid level trailers as the others combined.
We looked at HHII, Carriage, and Sunnybrook all 10K more, and then at Cardinal and Montana. We purchased the Cardinal for the king bed, nice computer desk and the fact that many of the Montana cabinets where mounted REALLY high of the walls. Plus my wife thought it was too dark inside.

I think you read about less unhappy Cedar Creek owners. Of course is is a little less of a MASS produced product than the Montana PHENOMENON!

Does this older hitch have the left/right tilt feature? If not then an upgrade to a four way tilt model is good. Chris

RE: Switched from DTV SD to HD, Aiming the Slimline Dish

I aligned another RV'ers HD Directv dish using the meters in the DVR and he had DTV out for another problem. Tech said alignment was perfect! Set the elevation and tilt, zero'd in on 101 and then fine tuned on 103 (C).

RE: looking at new 5th wheel

Jimdee said!
"Our weight form from the factory says it weighs 14,400 lbs dry. Add fll water & propane of around 680 lbs, and that leaves a little over 900 lbs cargo capacity. We're concerned about that, especially since it came with E-rated (Chinese) tires. It does have 7,000 lb axles, so we're thinking of upgrading the wheels and tires eventually."
What a shame, a quality builder that is still not gotten on board with quality tires. Did they have a option for 17.5 rims and H rated tires?
Many of the higher end units now are coming with 17.5 rims.

RE: inverters/chargers

You may have blown your converter! They are not that high of quality. Are you AC lights working? Are DC items working when you charge up the battery from other sources. We have a DC switch by the door that gets knock off from time to time.

RE: If you were thinking about doing a fireplace in your 5'ver

Chris...I'm interested in why you think the insert is only for a stick house & not an Rv? Can you supply any information that backs up what your claiming...or is you post just your opinion?
What I meant was that it is made in set in an existing fireplace and does not include the front frame and glass like normal RV units.

RE: If you were thinking about doing a fireplace in your 5'ver

...& you live in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Wal-Mart in Newport News has the Dimplex 12309 fire place insert on clearance for $124.00...& you all know they hover around $200 bucks.
Just thought I'd spread the word of the good deal amongst RVer's.
That model in for a home fireplace not a RV! Chris
