RE: Ohio Rallies for 2009

We're praying for you Dan. Thanks to all our Vets and active duty people. If you enjoy all the freedoms you have, thank a Vet. I have today off. Just need to find something to do. Go visit Dan in the hospital! :B I got home 1/2 hour ago. ;)

RE: Leaving FW hitched?

I never unloaded construction trucks in the past and don't put down landing jacks while traveling. I don't see any difference between the two. A ton of 5th wheel is no different then a ton of construction equipment/supplies. If the truck can't do what it was designed to do maybe one should consider a different truck brand?

RE: Can You Tow A Fifth Wheel With A Ford F150 w/ 5.5 ft bed?

The crew cab F-150 has a bed that is far too short to use for fifth wheel towing, Explain this link....

RE: The Tom McCarl Memorial Rally, Oct 16-18,2009 Mt. Eaton, Oh

Ok. I think it is time for me to step in and give my side of the story. Steve posted that we needed someone/somewhere to have the Christmas thingy. I thot it would be fun to have it at the resort so I called but the reservation office was closed. I then forgot and several days went by until I remembered and made the call again to make sure it was okay and no one else had the club house reserved and the real cost of the cabins so I would have the info to present this weekend. I also knew Roger/Cindy and Dan/Lori were not going to be at the shindig this weekend and being friends I decided to call them to get their ideas and their vote. I understood I had one negative and one positive, and and I also called Steve thinking he volunteered because no one else had spoke up and wanted to give him a chance to let it go and I would take it. He informed me he would take it and thanks but no thanks on my offer. I did not feel it important to make it public at this point. When I again got on the thread I saw it was public and Steve had stated his vote publicly, so I dropped my offer and stated so in my post. I consider both Roger and Steve very good friends and it hurts me to see that this has been discussed in a public/international internet forum where my friends are at odds and other friends taking sides. Yes, we all have different opinions, likes, dislikes, etc but that is what keeps life from getting boring. As I stated in another post I'm glad not everyone thinks, likes, or acts like me. As I stated before this world isn't big enough for two of me. I just ask that this issue be dropped and we go forward. I am sorry for all the trouble I've caused because of this. Those who want to sometime visit the resort are welcome to do so but not as a part of the Ohio Rally group but as friends on dates not interfering with Ohio Rally activities.

RE: The Tom McCarl Memorial Rally, Oct 16-18,2009 Mt. Eaton, Oh

Actually, I vote we have it at my house. Here are a few pieces of information: The cabins are less expensive than the motel near Camp Sands $45 v $75. They also allow pets. The cabins have cooking facilities and utensils, etc. I believe you may have to bring your own bed linens or pay a small fee for use of theirs. Use of the clubhouse would be free. There is a hot tub. There is an indoor pool. If desired, you can stay for the weekend and take advantage of all the amenities. 'Smaller group' gatherings are possible at the cabins (much like is done now in our coaches at the rallies). One family will not be stuck cleaning up after everyone leaves. I just don't see a down side. Did I miss anything or misrepresent anything, Duane? I haven't been on lately but I see the boss has spoken. I drop my offer. I'm sorry, I thot I'd read that someone/place was needed for Christmas thingy but was apparently wrong.

RE: The Tom McCarl Memorial Rally, Oct 16-18,2009 Mt. Eaton, Oh

Nevermind Mick, just because I probably won't use it doesn't mean it's not a good idea. Thankfully, not everyone operates like me so it's a good possibility it may well come in very handy for most others. I don't want to stop anyone from doing it their way, after all this world isn't big enough for two of me. How many other people do you see use their cellphone cameras taking picts of UPC labels on goods in a store to quickly compare prices of the same item elsewhere such as Walmart, Target, and Home Depot? :S

RE: The Tom McCarl Memorial Rally, Oct 16-18,2009 Mt. Eaton, Oh

I guess I might as well set the record strait. :W With my iphone I get radar, weather forecast and current weather for both departing and arrival airports. TFR's routing, file flight plans, US and Canadian customs. I can do all my preflight calculations etc. I have a program from aopa that lets me look up info on any US airport. I get my clearances, make hotel reservations, etc. When I get to the destination I can search for restaurants and then using Navigon GPS program I get spoken turn by turn instructions while listening to the ipod feature. If I see something interesting enroute or while walking I can either take a still pict or video, even snakes. Right Bonnie? While waiting for pax I can sit back in a recliner and listen to ipod, text message, FM or AM radio, play Air hockey, race cars, watch one of several movies I have loaded on it or… I can read email, surf the net, facebook, photobucket, and email. After getting my blood pressure up from reading the BS on RV.net I can go outside and play the harmonica on it to get my BP down to FAA requirements to safely make the flight home. After landing I can log my time electronically, send receipts, bills, call my wife to warn her I'm back. Independent of the internet I have: three calendars, with alerts, to help me keep my schedule strait, even Ohio Rally activities. I can make voice dictations or just record someone making big claims and then play it back when they deny it. It can be used as a megaphone when plugged into external speakers. Spoken turn by turn GPS navigation which apparently works much better then Steve's. I use it to convert ft to meters, kg to lbs., km to miles, C to F, F to C, level the camper, prove the braggarts 15% slope he claimed to just pull with his honk'n big truck is really 7%, and level the new kitchen window I'm installing. When I go for a walk I can measure the distance, check the backyard bird book and even play bird sounds to bring the birds closer for close up beauty, this all without internet access. When I get home from my walk, flight or job I can print out any photos I want printed on my HP printer which is in my office when within 50 ft of the house via Wifi. I am considering purchasing a fax program to fax directly from my iphone and also a credit card reader so I can be paid before I ever climb into my vehicle to leave the job site. So, do I use the printed calendar (never have) or will I use the web based calendar? Don't know. The CEO of ATT just yesterday complained that 3% of smartphone users (iphone) use 40% of data band and hinted it may be rationed in the future. Kinda like rationing Ford vehicles to force folks buy more Government Motors vehicles. Sooo maybe not. Oh yeah! Did I say I can also make phone calls on my phone? :B

RE: Axles flipped = some strange looks

You did the exact right thing by mounting your axles under the springs to level it while towing. Now if you want to change the wheels to 16" or no is your decision as you will have the clearance. Let folks ask questions. The important thing now is get out there and use it! Happy camping.

RE: How low can I go

My grey and black tanks are fully exposed underneath. I dump two gallon antifreeze in each. The fresh tank is under the sofa inside and the water lines run with the heat duct along the driver side between the fresh tank, external wall or just the duct in other parts. Makes good camping into the mid teens. When not camping a dip into the 20's for a few hours before warming back up thru the day don't require anything. Your experience may vary.

RE: Winding down

Low temps in the mid 30's low 40's this week. The fresh water tank is full. The black and gray are empty. The generator needs gassed and rig hooked up. I'm headed out for some boondocking this weekend! Just hope it doesn't snow too deep this winter so I can get it out on weekends.

RE: Diesel F150 spotted!

I installed a 105ci 4cyl Perkins in a Volvo car, a 236ci 4 cyl. Perkins I turbo'ed into a lighter F250 and had all the engineering data to install a 4BT Cummins into a Ford Ranger. I've wished many times I would have gone thru with that project. Someone was smart enough to do it tho. I would have left it looking stock tho with possibly the only suspension mod being heavier springs, shocks. I wanted it to replace my factory '86 Turbo diesel Ranger

RE: Plugging RV to house elec supply in winter???

I have been using a standard 30 amp rv extension cord summer and winter. I discovered that mowing over the cord in summer is much harder on it then the cold winter weather. :(

RE: Why shouldn't I?

On my fifth wheel the only thing between my entertainment cabinet and system and the left side tires is a plastic fender. On the right side is the furnace, gas line, wiring, heat ducts, water lines, and converter. My style camper is no longer made so it will have to last a while. If I ever see a nay sayer along the road broke down with a flat it will be a very good source of entertainment... for me. Mine has gone off twice, both times at night when it is impossible to tell something is wrong. Once during a rain storm. It is very easy to slow, stop and plug and re-air a tire. One set of tires would cost more then the monitoring system. If someone got money to burn replacing tires every couple years but too tight to buy a monitoring system = save a penny, spend a dollar. I wonder if the naysayers have engine oil lites/gauges, or temp gauges in their tow vehicles. I've never lost oil pressure on an engine in nearly 50 years. What a waste of money.
