RE: News, Is This the Best Week to Buy a Car?

Traditionally February is the slowest month for car sales and I've found sellers more eager to cut a good deal. Out of the last six vehicles I've bought, I purchased five of them in January or February.

RE: Sequoia National park campgrounds

I don't recall for sure, but I think at 23' you may be too long to take your trailer into the park. As an earlier post said, the roads in and out of Sequoia are very steep with very, very, VERY tight turns - you cannot appreciate this until you see (and drive) them. Would not be my idea of a good time. We stayed at Sequoia RV Ranch in Three Rivers. Decent place run by nice folks, relatively clean and quiet and close to the park entrance. Sites a bit on the small side.

RE: Gettsburg

Drummer Boy used to be our favorite, but based on our last visit in '07 we will not return. The counter help at Granite Hill were very rude - we will not stay there EVER. Artillery Ridge is nice - just be aware they rent and board horses so you may have the aromas associated with that. Round Top was also nice but have not been there in a long time. We have visited the KOA - it is nice but the sites are very small. Gettysburg CG is on our list of places to visit as we've heard many good things about it.

RE: Death Valley

Another vote for Pahrump as a place from which to tour the area. We stayed at Terribles - nice place but will probably still be busy at that time of the year. As others have said - stay on the paved roads. Scotty's Castle - yes. DV is a starkly beautiful place. Also, do make the side trip to Rhyolite.

RE: 2010 vacation ideas

My suggestions - Craters of the Moon in Idaho, Golden Spike NM, Salt Lake City, and Arches in Utah, Durango & Silverton RR, Mesa Verde NP, Great Sand Dunes NM, Pikes Peak, Gorge RR in Colorado, Yellowstone NP, Devil's Tower, Grand Teton NP in Wyoming, Theodore Roosevelt NP in North Dakota. These are just a few......plenty of things to do while waiting for the Black Hills area to clear out after the motorcycle "event" in Sturgis. Enjoy & safe travels.

RE: Death Valley temps

We visited Death Valley in late June. Long story short we've added DV to our list of place to which we will return but in the winter time (that will have to wait until retirement........). Do visit Rhyolite - NEAT place. October will still be very warm but much more bearable - the day of our visit at DV the temperature hit 118 degrees. It did rain a bit as we entered the visitor's center but the once the drops hit the ground they would evaporate completely in 5 to 8 seconds!!

Another vote for Lake Rudolph CG in Santa Claus, IN right next to Holiday World. Especially if you have kids or grandkids.

RE: Terrible's Rv Resort in Pahrump, Nevada

We stayed there in June of '09. Loved it - wish we could have stayed longer. It was clean, quiet, the people that ran the place were nice. All sites have a level concrete pad. Ducks come around and beg for handouts. We must be on their mailing list because they keep inviting us back. I wish I could accept.............

RE: yellowstone

My standard advice about YNP: take lots of your own food and supplies before you go in the Park. What the "trading posts" have is very limited in selection of brands & sizes and what is there is VERY expensive. Be sure your LP is full or close to it; it gets very cold in YNP at night - down in the 30's at night even in July. We stayed at Fishing Bridge because of its central location. It is the only full hookup CG in the park if you need them. Many stay at the other CG's in the park and really like them. Many also like the CG's outside the park in West Yellowstone; prices there won't be much cheaper and I could not justify doing all the driving to get from there to the things we wanted to see in the park. RE: Yellowstone trip

You can get more than flurries at YNP in June. We attended a ranger presentation back in '04 in which he showed us a GORGEOUS landscape shot of Yellowstone Lake area after a good, fresh, thick coat of snow. Then he told us it was taken on July 4 a couple of years earlier. When we departed YNP (July 5 of 04) it was 37 degrees that morning.........Be sure you have warm clothes and a good supply of LP. Also, stock up on food and supplies before entering YNP - prices are high and selection is skimpy. We stayed at Fishing Bridge; despite the negative things that get posted here, it is centrally located so you don't waste a lot of time driving from W. Yellowstone to attractions in the park.

RE: Dodge Boys....

Chrysler better do something and do it quick. Ford has far outpaced the Big 3 with the variety and quality of their offerings and GM has finally woke up and smelled the coffee. Durability/reliability of Dodge/Chrysler of the recent past has been dismal. Maybe their pick-ups are o.k. but they can't remain viable until they improve the rest of their models.
Uncle has Chrysler 300m.... 2006 NO ISSUES...Wife has PT Cruiser Convertible GT turbo... 50k miles ... NO PROBLEMS!!! I have 04 Cummins and 4 others folks I know...NO PROBLEMS... you read too much Consumer Reports...
Yes, I do. I have owned several Chryslers over the years; I had two Slant-6 Dusters that were virtually bulletproof, except the bodies rusted out from under the motor. My recently retired TV is a '00 Ram Wagon with 89K and still going strong - it is now my daily driver. To me, Chrysler has lost good business sense; when you plunk down good money only to find out you've just purchased "flash and dash" you won't get a lot of repeat business. JMHO

RE: East coast travel

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is worth it. The drive on the eastern shore of MD is very nice and not heavily traficked. I haven't been on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry in some time but I don't recall the toll being all that unreasonable.
I-95 in NJ is a toll road for some of the way, especially as you approach NYC. If you want to go direct on I-95 and make good time (and I am serious on this one) try to time your travel through those urban areas in the middle of the night. On our way to FL a few years ago we left here at midnight which put us through Baltimore at 3 a.m. and DC at 4 a.m. Smooth sailing.
Safe travels.

RE: Summer 2010 New England Trek - Recommendations Anyone?

If you are visiting Maine be sure to take in the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport. If you're going to Freeport to visit L. L. Bean stay at Desert Dunes CG just west of town. NICE little CG when we were there back in '02.
Harrisburg - not exactly a prime area to camp/sightsee. O.K. if you are just going to overnight in the area. Amish country in Lebanon County (east and south of Harrisburg) is worth a visit.

2009 Trip Stats

Well, I finally got around to crunching the numbers of our 20-state tour of the Southwest, West coast, and northern Great Plains this summer......
Days on the Road: 35
Total Miles: 8,290 (60 of those by ferry across Lake Michigan)
Total gallons of fuel (regular unleaded): 693.689
Total cost of fuel: $1,865.82
Average MPG: 11.864 (does not include the ferry mileage)
Average cost per gallon: $2.69
Most Expensive Gas: $3.75/gal El Portal, CA (right outside Yosemite NP)
Least Expensive Gas: $2.36/gal Allentown, PA
Nicest RV Park/Commercial: Hell's Canyon RV Park & Resort Clarkston, WA
Honorable Mention #1 Terribles Casino Resort/RV Park Pahrump, NV
Honorable Mention #2 Red Bluff RV Park Red Bluff, CA
Nicest State Park: Collier Memorial State Park, OR (near Crater Lake)
Worst RV Park: Indian Flats RV Park El Portal CA (postage-stamp size site, REALLY interesting clientele.......)
Honorable Mention: Cahokia RV Parque, Cahokia IL (less of a CG and more of a long-term living facility for more REALLY interesting people)
Hottest Temperature: 118 degrees, Death Valley July 1
Coldest Temperature: 41 degrees, Crater Lake July 9
National Parks/Monuments: St. Louis Arch, Aztec Ruins (NM), Painted Desert & Petrified Forest (AZ), Sunset Crater & Wupatki (AZ), Grand Canyon (AZ), Death Valley (CA), Giant Sequoia/Kings Canyon (CA), Yosemite (CA), Crater Lake (OR), Little Bighorn (MT), Theodore Roosevelt NP (ND).
Other Attractions: Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR (NM), Meteor Crater (AZ), Rt. 66 (AZ), Hoover Dam (NV), Rhyolite Ghost Town (NV), Legoland (CA), Fossil Beds (Wheeler County, OR), Elkhorn Ghost Town (MT), Lewis & Clark Caverns (MT), Kalahari Water Park (WI), S.S. Badger (Lake Michigan Car Ferry), Great Lakes Naval Museum/U.S.S. Silversides (MI).
Total Cost: I really don't care. The unbroken family time and the sheer volume of stuff we saw, not to mention the "hands-on education" instead of the on-line kind, is PRICELESS!! We've achieved our goal of visiting all of the Lower 48 states. When we are socked in with the cold and damp Pennsylvania winters, I need only close my eyes and think about what we saw, and yes, I get warm.
Safe travels everyone.

RE: Towing in Colorado

We did Wolf Creek Pass in '04 and had no problems. We didn't set any speed records but then again the scenery is spectacular, so slow down and enjoy. The improvements mentioned in an earlier post were underway back then so it should be an even better drive now.
